Kids Collect Cans, Bottles for Furry Friends in Need

A neighborhood block party this weekend is also a fundraiser for a local animal shelter.

A neighborhood block party over in the East End this Saturday isn't just for fun -- some of the neighbhorhood youngsters will be holding a bottle and can drive as well to raise funds for the Northeast Animal Shelter on behalf of pets in need.

The block party goes from noon - 11 p.m. at 19 Jefferson Rd.

Amy Jalbert tells Peabody Patch that the effort started in her home because of her family's sick dog.

"My son JJ is ten years old, and unfortunately last Friday we received the devastating news that our five-year-old rottweiler, Tyson, has Stage Four Lymphoma. Unfortunately we are not able to save Tyson's life because lymphoma is not a curable disease," Amy said.

"The children thought it would be a great idea to try and raise some money to try and help out some of our other furry little friends at the shelter," she said.

Amy says a group of youngsters, ages five to 10, will be out for the can drive.

"I am so proud of my son and this wonderful group of kids," she said.
