Peabody High Football Claims First Home Win in Two Years

The Tanners were winless last year and hadn't won a home game at Coley Lee Field since September 2011 before Friday night.

The Tanners' varsity football squad defeated visiting Somerville Friday night, 34-27, claiming the first home win for Peabody since 2011.

Senior offensive guard Matt Crawford told a Salem News reporter the victory felt especially good after coming off last year's winless season.

The Tanners have struggled in recent years, seeing some improvement in the 4-1/2 seasons Scott Wlasuk spent as head coach (amassing a 17-31 record), but there were no wins last year for the Tanners.

Wlasuk stepped down mid-season and assistant coach Matt O'Brien was tapped for the interim job until baseball coach Mark Bettencourt was hired to coach football as well.

The Tanners started off this season with a loss to conference opponent Lynn English and now host Danvers on Friday.
