Is it a surprise? distance running star Catarina Rocha captured the state title in the mile on Sunday and broke the meet record at the same time.
Rocha clocked in 4:50.38 -- about five seconds ahead of Foxborough's Liz Holmes -- to break the 2007 record (4:52.11) set by Bridget Dahlberg of Newton South. All-States for indoor track was held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury.
Rocha's time was also five seconds faster than her performance two weeks ago in the Division I Championships. She now advances to the New England Championships on March 2.
Two other Lady Tanners competed on Sunday as well. Pam Zabala tossed for 10th in the girls' shot put with 34 3-1/2 while Heather MacLean clocked in 42.73 in the 300 meter for a 15th place finish.
On the boys' side, Zach Grube scored the only point for the Tanners, placing 8th in the high jump at 6-2, and he likewise advances to New Englands.
Nick Ingham took 10th in the 600 meter (1:24.33) while Drew Fossa clocked in 21st in the 2-mile (10:41.77) and Grube didn't make it past the preliminaries in the 55 meter hurdles (13th, 7.96) The 4x400 relay team of Ingham, Grube, Tomas Martinez and Tommy Drover finished 11th (3:30.39)
