Who's Who and Where to Vote in State Primary

Here's your local guide to the state primary on Sept. 6.

Massachusetts holds its state primary election Thursday to narrow down the field of political party candidates in a number of races prior to November -- there are only two contested seats at this time, however, that affect Peabody.

In the 2nd Essex District race for the state Senate, which represents Peabody, Salem, Beverly, Danvers and Topsfield, there are four Democrats vying for the party candidacy in the general election.

Here's a look at the ballot, courtesy of the Secretary of State's office:

EDWARD J. CARROLL    162 1/2 North St., Salem
Former Governor's Councilor JOAN B. LOVELY    14 Story St., Salem
President, Salem City Council MARY-ELLEN MANNING    80 Lowell St., Peabody
Present Governor's Councillor, Fifth District JOHN P. SLATTERY    20 Orchard St., Peabody
Former State Representative

The other contested race is for the 5th District Governor's Councilor, which represents Peabody along with 38 other cities and towns. Mary-Ellen Manning, who is the current councilor, has stepped down to run for Senate. There are four Democrats vying for the council seat.

Here's a look at that portion of the ballot:

DONALD BUMILLER    35 King George Dr., Boxford
EILEEN R. DUFF    8 Barberry Heights Rd., Gloucester
DAVID W. EPPLEY    69 Boston St., Salem
GEORGE T. O'BRINE    5 Locust St., Salem

Polls are open Thursday from 7 a.m. - 8 p.m. and voters will also see a number of uncontested candidates on the ballot, depending on their party affiliation.

Democrats will see Elizabeth Warren for U.S. Senate, incumbents John Tierney for U.S. Representative, Joyce Spiliotis or Theodore Speliotis for state Representative (depending on which part of the city they live), Thomas Driscoll for Essex County Clerk of Courts and John O'Brien for Essex Southern District Register of Deeds.

Republicans will see incumbent U.S. Sen. Scott Brown, Richard Tisei for U.S. Representative, Maura Ciardiello for Governor's Councilor 5th District and Richard Jolitz for state Senate. There are no further party nominations for other positions nor are there are any Green-Rainbow Party candidates.
