Firefighters Knock Down Small Blaze on Washington Street

The fire appeared to have started underneath decking outside the Pioneer House.

Peabody firefighters are at the scene of a small blaze this afternoon at the Pioneer House.

Initial reports came in shortly after 2 p.m. of smoke showing from the exterior of the building at 2 Washington St.

The building was evacuated and firefighters at the scene said material under the decking of the porch may have caught fire.

The intersection of Washington and Main streets was also closed off to traffic.

According to reports, the fire was knocked down within about 10 minutes and crews said they would have to ventilate the building for smoke.
