Elderly Man Hit By Car Has Died; Police Still Investigating Accident

An 87-year-old man struck by a car Sunday afternoon outside a West Peabody church has died. Police say the accident investigation is still underway.

Peabody police confirm that an elderly male pedestrian who was struck by a car on Sunday has died.

Detective Michael Crane said the man, 87-year-old Theodore Buttner of Somerville, died at Mass. General Hospital in Boston that afternoon a few hours after he was admitted.

The accident occurred at approximately 1 p.m. outside Saint Adelaide Parish on Lowell Street. Police said that afternoon that Buttner was crossing the street, in the crosswalk, when he was hit by a 2004 Buick LeSabre.

Crane said witnesses identified Buttner as a regular parishioner at the church.

He said the Buick was operated by an 84-year-old Peabody man who did stop at the scene once he realized what happened.

It is unclear if the vehicle was traveling along Lowell Street or turning in or out of one of the parking lots -- there is a lot next to the church and one across the street.

Crane said state police are still wrapping up their investigation of the incident. Once that is concluded, police will determine what if any charges will be filed against the driver.

"Police will determine if any charges will be files against driver." it's already heartbreaking that a man is dead, but charging an 84 year old serves no purpose in an accident. That being said, laws need to be revised about issuing licenses to the elderly. I've seen way too many older people do a lot of damage because they are just too old to drive a car anymore:( Sad all around.

Very sad. I say it all the time, elderly drivers need to be tested.

This man survived World War II only to be killed in front of his church. Very sad, and our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family as they gather to mourn him.
