Elderly Man Hit By Car Has Died; Police Still Investigating Accident

An 87-year-old man struck by a car Sunday afternoon outside a West Peabody church has died. Police say the accident investigation is still underway.

Peabody police confirm that an elderly male pedestrian who was struck by a car on Sunday has died.

Detective Michael Crane said the man, 87-year-old Theodore Buttner of Somerville, died at Mass. General Hospital in Boston that afternoon a few hours after he was admitted.

The accident occurred at approximately 1 p.m. outside Saint Adelaide Parish on Lowell Street. Police said that afternoon that Buttner was crossing the street, in the crosswalk, when he was hit by a 2004 Buick LeSabre.

Crane said witnesses identified Buttner as a regular parishioner at the church.

He said the Buick was operated by an 84-year-old Peabody man who did stop at the scene once he realized what happened.

It is unclear if the vehicle was traveling along Lowell Street or turning in or out of one of the parking lots -- there is a lot next to the church and one across the street.

Crane said state police are still wrapping up their investigation of the incident. Once that is concluded, police will determine what if any charges will be filed against the driver.
