Empty Bowls Dinner and Free Flu Clinic This Week

Today is Tuesday, Jan. 14. Here are five things to know today in Peabody.

1. Have you read Peabody native Don Finegold's latest murder mystery? This one, "Murder in Leather Town," sets the scene in some very familiar surroundings. The novel was released in 2013 and is Finegold's ninth. Finegold, 84, spent 50 years as an executive and tanner in the leather industry and then turned to penning murder mysteries after he retired in 1997.
2. The School Committee meets on Tuesday at the Kiley School (7:30 p.m.). An executive session to discuss a personnel matter is scheduled at 7 p.m. and may delay the start of the regular meeting.
3. The Peabody Institute Library starts up its Food for Fines program this Wednesday, which runs from Jan. 15 to Feb. 14. Donations of canned goods or other non-perishable items will be accepted to clear overdue fines on Peabody library materials. The program runs at all three library branches. All donations benefit Haven from Hunger.
4. J Babies: There's a parent and infant support group that meets on Wednesdays (11:30 a.m.) at the North Suburban Jewish Community Center.
5. The Peabody Health Department is offering another free flu shot clinic at City Hall Thursday (3-5 p.m.). No appointments are necessary.
6. St. John's Prep hosts its annual Empty Bowls Dinner Party Thursday (6 p.m.) to benefit Haven from Hunger. Come purchase a custom made bowl, fill it with tasty soup and support a local food pantry.
