Police said bomb threat after the school was evacuated earlier this morning for a gas odor.

Peabody Police charged a Peabody High School student with making a bomb threat after the school was evacuated for a gas odor this morning.

The arrest occurred shortly after Peabody High Principal Edward Sapienza said students and teachers in some classrooms were evacuated around 9 a.m. after they detected a gas-like odor that made them feel uncomfortable  Sapienza decided to act quickly to ensure the safety of the 1,900-member student body and his staff.

Sapienza said he made an announcement to tell everyone there was a suspicious odor in the building before he pulled the fire alarm at 9 a.m. calling for an orderly evacuation to the nearest emergency exits.

City firefighters then tested the gas levels with CO2 detectors and found them to be normal, Sapienza. Technicians from National Grid also arrived on scene and began investigating the source of the gas odor, which was believed to emanate from the boiler room.

Overall, Sapienza said the students and his staff responded to the incident very well and no one needed any medical attention. He said the school nurse's office also didn't see any students.

Most importantly, Sapienza said the school erred on the side of caution. He also feels the school did not overreact by calling for the evacuation.

"It's always best just to get the kids out of harm's way, and that's just what we did," he said. "There was no imminent danger to anyone."
