13 Left Homeless After Hancock Street Fire

Thirteen residents at 5 Hancock St. were left homeless after Friday's fire.

Firefighters from four communities extinguished Friday afternoon.

The first call came in about 1:30 p.m. and the fire was extinguished after 3 p.m. officials struck a total of three alarms to bring aparatus from Danvers, Salem and Lynnfield.

Thirteen people were left homeless. Residents of 5 Hancock St., said there was a power outage shortly before the fire. When a tenant went to check the circuit box, it blew up, reported residents.

Lisa Jaber, a tenant, who is pregnant and due in two weeks, said she and her 8-year-old daughter lost everything.

“There will be no Christmas this year,” she said outside of the smoldering apartment where she lived.

The fire ultimately claimed one life: , who died at Salem Hospital after sustaining injuries inside the building. A female was also transported to the hospital and was listed in good condition.

Saturday of food, clothing, blankets, toys and money for the displaced residents. No official information has been released yet on offering means of support to Rice's family.
