ReplyI drove past on the Northbound side just after this accident happened last night. Awful, awful, awful. I really hope everyone is OK.
The vehicle on the trailer explains why I saw the car on its side facing the wrong direction. By some miracle, the 18-wheeler that was right behind the accident scene was able to stop in time.

it is ultimately Bettencourt's decision to accept or decline the proposed salary increase. Considering we are who he serves, we should have the right to vote if he deserves an increase or not. He hasn't even proven himself yet!

I am on-call 24/7 for my job as well, and get paid a fraction of this. Not a solid argument.
And Peabody already does pay the mayor more than other cities. Did you not see the comparison of other cities and towns? A significant number of mayors get paid less than $95,000 - Bettencourt's current salary.

ReplyBettencourt hasn't proven himself yet. As far as I'm concerned, he is a probationary employee and should not even be eligible for a salary increase yet.
Furthermore, to say that it's been 12 years since "the mayor" has had an increase is completely inaccurate and does not represent the truth. While I did not like Bonfanti, I have to respect the fact that he declined any salary increases while he was in office. The reason there has not been a salary increase in 12 years is partially due to HIS decision not to take an increase.
Bettencourt has no idea what financial hardship means, as he already makes 2-3 times more than most of the working class people in Peabody make. The people he serves in the city have not had cost of living salary increases, yet their cost of living does increase every year.
I really hope he does the right thing by his citizens and declines this irresponsible vote by the council.

there actually was an incident where a pedestrian was killed in a crosswalk in downtown Peabody. The timing for what they are reporting is incorrect, as it happened about a month ago (unless it happened again...) near City Hall.

Replyas i said yesterday in reference to the poor old man who was struck on Lowell Street last weekend and has since passed away - i honestly believe that in high pedestrian areas, they should install rumble strips and/or speedbumps within 20 feet of the crosswalk. it will slow the drivers down in time for anyone who may be crossing the street, and slow traffic. as a resident of Lowell Street, i see vehicles driving 20 MPH or greater in excess of the speed limit. It is very dangerous and because police are dealing with other idiots in the city, they are unable to be everywhere to catch every violator.

Replyi really hope the old guy pulls through, also. Haven't heard any updates.
i live on the other end of Lowell, near downtown. People haul ass no matter where they are. I am all for putting rumble strips and/or speedbumps on the road 20 feet from any pedestrian crosswalk. That will slow drivers down.

ReplyI know I ask this every single time, but WHY oh WHY is someone calling 911 to report a turkey in someone's yard or a VULTURE on a sidewalk?
SUCH a waste of city resources.
