ReplyUmm, congratulations???
So that's 1837 out of the 2500 that responded to the survey. I'm no math major, but that doesn't seem so good.

On the article Council Adopts Zoning Ban on Pot Shops in Peabody
Greg
3:29 pm on Friday, January 25, 2013
ReplyI wouldn't call the Mayor a wolf in sheep's clothing over this. In fact, i don't really understand the analogy there at all.
I think the issue regarding medical marijuana isn't that we passed a law or that the law was poorly worded. Rather, I think the issue is the state govt. hasn't provided an infrastructure to support this yet. Last time I checked, that's actually the role of government (and politicians) to implement the policies that voters vote on.
So rather than an outright ban on this, I would have preferred a 6 month or even a 1 year hiatus on any permits being issued. Let's give the state some time to finalize the rules around implementation before implementing such a ban.
Other than that subtle change, I do appreciate the councils take on this issue. Especially considering the state of illegal drug activity in this city to begin with.

On the article How Many Licensed Gun Owners Are in Peabody?

ReplyGreat analogy between guns and cars. How much regulation and control does the govt exert on the auto-industry? Let's see....there are safety requirements, cafe standards, required licensing, speed limits, insurance requirements, etc.... Does any of this inhibit your freedom?
In regards to the waiting period, a lot of gun-related deaths are suicides. I think the thinking is the waiting period has the potential to give these troubled people the opportunity to re-think their decision. Considering the amount of online shopping people do today, does waiting a week for something really inhibit you? And don't give me the "it gives the criminals a week to get the jump on me argument". You live in Peabody, not the wild west.
I've heard the argument between 10/30 bullet clips and its a reasonable argument. But so is the inverse of that argument....which is if it only takes you seconds to reload, then its really not a big deal.
BTW - your absolutely correct in regards to our downsizing mental health services in this country. We clearly need to do a better job of reaching out....and part of that includes making a connection between mental health and access to guns.Just a quick question....are you this upset about the TSA when you fly?

ReplyJames, who is going after law abiding citizens here? Who is taking your rights away? Please tell me how background checks and waiting periods do that?
They don't do that. Your just upset that your team lost the last election, so you wave your faux flag of patriotism like its your teams colors. That's what's wrong with this country. I'm willing to have dialog, but your simply too angry to engage.
3x I've asked why background checks are bad and you haven't answered once. I think that says it all.

ReplySo again the argument against very reasonable gun control measures is cockroaches and gun-free school zones.
Can someone on the right provide 1 single argument against background checks or waiting periods?
Or 1 single argument for why you need an AK-47?
Or allowing the govt to actually conduct research on gun violence?
That's what I thought. Your all frothing at the mouth but you just don't know why.....

ReplyI didn't realize there has been a proposal to ban all guns or confiscate those that people already have? You people are really blowing Obama's proposals out of proportion.
What is so offensive about requiring people to go through a background check before buying a gun?
What is so offensive about limiting the types of guns that people can purchase? I mean, we limit the % of alcohol in your beer or the amount of lead in your gasoline. How is this any different?
Not to mention, how is limiting access to semi-automatic weapons different than limiting access to grenade-launchers? Both share a sole purpose of killing people.
Bonnie-Jean....your statement above is "how dare you limit the gun I can buy since that infringes upon my 2nd Amendment rights, but let's just imprison this entire group of people over here". Doesn't that sound even a little crazy to you???

On the article Schools Lay Out Action Plans to Improve on MCAS
Greg
8:31 am on Wednesday, November 14, 2012
ReplyWere specific MCAS score goals set for next year by school & grade? And what happens if scores don't improve next year?
I know Mr. Mastracola doesn't want to here this, but yes, MCAS scores are used to rank schools and right now our schools are not doing very well vs. other communities.
So while I give him credit for developing an action plan (this is more than what can be said for the previous administration), the proof is in the pudding. We want to see improvements in scores.
I'd like to see our School Committee put a line in the sand with these scores and make it be known across the system that salary increases and jobs are on the line unless specific, measurable goals that are directly related to increases in MCAS scores are met. Results matter!

On the article LIVE: Chat With State Rep. Ted Speliotis
Greg
2:07 pm on Wednesday, October 31, 2012
ReplyAs an undecided voter in this race, I have to say I'm not sure if this helped or hurt Rep Speliotis cause. I was already questioning what value he has provided me here in Peabody and I can see from the questions that others share my concern.
The Higgins project was clearly driven by Mayor Bettencourt. In fact, I find it disingenuous that Speliotis is attempting to take credit for this. This school (like many others in Peabody) is a disgrace. And guess what, it was a disgrace 10 years ago too. How come you didn't push for a new school then?
And where is the funds to support our downtown flooding issue? Or revitalizing Rt. 1 or downtown? What exactly have you accomplished in the 10+ yrs you've been in office?

This also begs the question of "why"? Why would you go ahead and complete a survey when you know the results are not going to be good or put the system in a positive light.
Newsweek sent out more than 5000 surveys and only received back 2400. So there were plenty of systems smart enough to not fill this out. How come our administrators thought this was a good idea?
