Charter School Gets Final OK From State Education Board

A new charter school in Saugus that will serve students from Peabody, Salem and Danvers as well received final approval from state education officials this week.

The North Shore is getting a new public charter school, following a vote from the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education this week. The board gave final approval on a 6-4 vote for Pioneer Charter School of Science, which is based in Everett, to open a new school in Saugus that will serve students in grades 7-12 from Peabody, Lynn, Salem, Danvers and Saugus. The curriculum will be focused on math and science and enroll a maximum of 360 students. PCSS plans to accept only 180 applications for grades 7-9, however, for when the charter opens in September. Higher grades will be accepted later and school officials expect to reach full capacity by 2016. “We want to thank the department, the commissioner and the board for their faith in…

North Shore Charter School Proposal Awaits Vote From State Education Board

A new school is proposed in Saugus that would serve students in grades 7-12 from Peabody, Salem, Danvers, Saugus and Lynn and be rooted in math, sciences and analytical thinking skills.

Peabody families may be able to enroll their students in a new North Shore charter school this fall if state education officials sign off on the proposal this week. The Pioneer Charter School of Science, based in Everett, received a favorable recommendation from state Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education Mitchell Chester earlier this month to open a new school in Saugus and that application now awaits a vote by the DESE board of directors on Feb. 26. If the board gives final approval for the proposal, the new public charter school plans to open its doors in September. PCSS had hoped to open two more schools North of Boston as well, but those applications were not recommended by Chester. The North Shore PCSS would serve …

Part 2 of 2 Pioneers website has a little bar chart comparing their MCAS Scores to the state and sending districts, what is missing here is that in that 10th grade cohort, 22.2 % of students with disabilities left (counseled out?) leaving Pioneer with 3 students with disabilities taking the MCAS! It doesn’t say what SPED designation these students were but there is a big difference between a .4 …   more ›

2 Charter Schools Proposed to Draw From Peabody Students

Pioneer Charter School of Science, based out of Everett, has filed an application to create three new schools, one of which would serve Peabody students.

Out of 22 preliminary plans filed with state education officials recently, two proposed public charter schools are looking to enroll Peabody students. The Pioneer Charter School of Science (PCSS) in Everett recently filed applications with the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to open three new public charter schools, one of which would serve Peabody students in grades 7-12. And the Asia Pacific Charter School is slated to serve grades 6-12 from Peabody, Lynnfield, Wakefield, North Reading, Reading, Stoneham and Wilmington. Specific locations for the PCSS schools have not been announced yet, but likely would not be formally determined until after the state approved the school applications. A spokesperson for …

Charter schools are filling a gap where the public schools are FAILING...They give parents OPTIONS for their children. If the public schools were doing a better job, parents and students wouldn't be looking for other options. I hope these schools come to fruition. Maybe if they give the public schools a run for their money, administrators will wake up and do something about lagging MCAS & SAT …   more ›
