How Many Licensed Gun Owners Are in Peabody?

With substantive gun control proposals now at both the federal and state levels, you may be wondering what the situation on the ground is in the Tanner City.

In light of the reinvigorated debate on gun control and substantive proposals at both the federal and state levels from President Barack Obama and Gov. Deval Patrick this week, you may be curious how many licensed gun owners there actually are in Peabody. According to some basic state data, between 2008 and 2012, about 3 percent of Peabody residents are licensed to carry large capacity weapons, i.e. semiautomatic guns. That's 1,688 licenses. A notable difference between Peabody and many other cities and towns in Massachusetts is that no one held a machine gun permit in the Tanner City. It is lawful in Massachusetts to obtain a license (Class 3) for a fully automatic weapon, but a person has to either be a state certified firearms …

Yeah but driving a car is a PRIVILIGE not a right. I don't fly so I cannot respond about the TSA. Chicago is the wild west and all their restrictions aren't keeping the gang bangers from having weaponry, only the law abiding. Peabody may not be the wild west but we still should have the right to protect our lives and property without a lot of harassment when someone does so. The police can't be …   more ›

Do You Agree With Gov. Patrick's Proposed Gun Restrictions?

Gov. Deval Patrick unveiled legislation on Wednesday that would tighten gun control laws in Massachusetts while increasing funding for mental health services and enhancing background checks. Is this sensible?

Are new proposed laws regarding guns in Massachusetts and mental health services sensible and pragmatic steps? Or are they knee-jerk measures that won't increase safety? Gov. Deval Patrick introduced new legislation Wednesday along those lines in the wake of the school shootings in Newtown, Conn. "I am encouraged by the palpable consensus in our Legislature that the time for action is now. All of us must pull in the same direction to bring about real change in this state and across the country," Patrick said in a press release.  The bill would require gun purchasers to undergo background checks at gun shows, reduce access to high-powered rounds of ammunition, and limit the number of weapon sales by licensed dealers to not more than one gun…

Bettencourt Signs Mayors' Gun Control Letter to Obama

More than 750 mayors from around the country, including 22 from Massachusetts are urging President Obama for stronger gun control in the wake of the Newtown, Conn. school shooting.

On Wednesday, Peabody Mayor Ted Bettencourt joined more than 750 mayors from around the country, who are part of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG) coalition, signing a letter to call on President Barack Obama and Congress to pass stricter gun control legislation.  The letter comes in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, when a 20-year-old man shot and killed 26 people, including 20 children, at a school in Newtown, Conn., his mother and himself.  "With all the carnage from gun violence in our country, it's still almost impossible to believe that a mass shooting in a kindergarten class could happen," New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a statement. Bloomberg is Co-Chair of MAIG. "We heard after Columbine …

Weak mayor, gives in to the media hype. Bloomberg is for a total gun ban. "No use in sporting events", shows he knows nothing about shooting.   more ›

Is Now the Time to Talk Gun Control?

Does the massacre at Newtown, Conn., signal the need for a political debate on gun regulations?

Before officials had even held their first press conference Friday, Facebook was abuzz with status updates about the Newtown, Conn., massacre. The statuses were split between those sending their condolences and those asking if the country would finally deal with the issue of gun control. Some fought back, asking for "respect" and mourning before political debate began. Others remained fierce in their belief that stricter gun control regulations would have prevented such a mass killing, saying the victims were shot multiple times and with semi-automatic weapons, according to Fox News. The guns were not illegal and were, in fact, owned by the shooter's mother. Among them were a semi-automatic .223 caliber Bushmaster rifle and two handguns. …

GK, Guns have been around for hundreds of years, but these mass shootings are a recent phenomena, ...guns are not the problem. This kid was isolated and constantly desensitized to killing. In addition, Conn. already has tough gun laws - ineffective. You must address the problem at the root cause, but to do so would be very uncomfortable for many and may cut into Hollywood's and video game profits…   more ›

TELL US: Should Massachusetts Gun Control Laws be Loosened?

A Massachusetts gun owners group is lobbying for passage of a bill that would confer lifetime gun licenses — no renewals necessary.

Way too much red tape. That's the complaint of the Gun Owners’ Action League of Massachusetts, a group that is urging passage of a law that would abolish the requirement of having to renew a gun permit every six years, according to the Boston Herald. For comparison, Massachusetts vehicle drivers' licenses need to be renewed every five years. But the league says local police cannot keep up with timely gun permit renewals, and legitimate gunowners go license-less until the cops get time to do the paperwork.  The law now allows 40 days for turning around license applications. In Boston, almost 1,000 people have applied for gun permits so far this year, with waits running about 10 weeks, the Herald quotes police spokeswoman Cheryl Fiandaca as …
