All of these men and women have names that are a part of our community. They left for work and war over 70 years ago and became a part of something so big that they had no idea how important their part could be to our overall success. We liberated entire nations and freed most of the northern and part of the southern hemisphere from oppression. I hope and pray we continue, every day, to honor …   more ›

What's Open, Closed for Veterans Day

Even though Sunday was actually Veterans Day, the national holiday is observed today with public offices and schools being closed.

While Veterans Day, so-called since 1954 to honor men and women who have served in the military, fell on Sunday this year, many government and school employees are on vacation for the national holiday on Monday. Here's a quick round-up of what's open and closed in Peabody today. If you know of more businesses that are open or closed, help out your fellow neighbors by leaving them in the comments.

The first annual Veterans Day breakfast drew a full house to the auditorium at City Hall.

Mayor Ted Bettencourt paid special tribute to the city's World War II veterans Sunday in an inaugural annual breakfast for Veterans Day held at City Hall. The packed event, which occurred prior to the formal ceremonies conducted later that morning outside City Hall, sought to honor all Peabody residents who served the United States in the armed forces and give special recognition to those of the "Greatest Generation." This year's Veterans Day ceremonies were hosted by the Portuguese-American War Veterans.

'Against All Odds, They Are Moving Forward'

PVMHS grad and U.S. Army Capt. Steve Patten talked to students on Friday, explaining it wasn't until he spent several months on an Afghanistan battlefield himself that he began to understand what American soldiers and their families go through.

"One day you might be a veteran," Peabody Veterans Memorial High School Principal Ed Sapienza reminded students on Friday. He urged those gathered for a student assembly in honor of Veterans Day to reflect seriously on the upcoming day of commemoration. And to bridge that connection for students, Steven Patten, a 1993 PVMHS grad, took the podium as the guest speaker to talk about his experiences in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General Corps and overseas in Afghanistan. Patten, a captain in the Army, recently returned from his second tour of duty in Afghanistan and contributed a flag flown there in honor of Christine Barbuto to her memorial at PVMHS. He said the first day he reported for duty at Fort Bragg in Texas, he was sitting in …

Mayor Hosting Breakfast to Honor Peabody War Vets

Mayor Bettencourt will host a breakfast for the city's war veterans Sunday, particularly those who served in World War II, as a new part of the city's annual Veterans Day ceremonies.

They fought the Nazis and Japanese forces, they put their lives on the line for the country they believed in, and then came home and went to work. They were called the "Greatest Generation" for all those reasons and more. At a time now when there are few veterans left from World War II, Mayor Ted Bettencourt would like to pay some small tribute to Peabody's soldiers on Veterans Day this Sunday. Bettencourt is hosting the 1st Annual Peabody Veterans Day Breakfast Sunday morning at City Hall. The inaugural breakfast will honor all Peabody residents who served the United States in the armed forces and will include a special commemoration for veterans of World War II. “The men and women who have served our country in the armed forces deserve …

What this generation had to do in order to defeat two major, evil forces in our world was just amazing. Our current "connected" generation cries when power goes out for 30 minutes and they can't connect to update their Facebook. Yet these men, women and families gave up many common daily items for YEARS without complaint. For those soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen who gave so much to us, and…   more ›
