VIDEO: Scenes From Peabody's First St. Paddy's Day Roast

The jokes were flying freely Saturday morning as Peabody's best known politicos roasted each other.

Wiggin Auditorium was full up Saturday morning for the First Annual St. Patrick's Day Breakfast and Roast at City Hall. City Council President and Treadwell's Ice Cream owner Tom Gould was the host and started off the wisecracking shortly after breakfast was served -- between him and several other Peabody politicians who took the podium, virtually no one and no topic was spared (all in good fun, of course). The jokes -- when they weren't targeted at city politicians -- covered everything from recent pay raises for the mayor and city councilors and the now infamous billboard on Lowell Street to medical marijuana and Congressman John Tierney's fierce battle for re-election. Tierney, state Sen. Joan Lovely and state Rep. Ted Speliotis were …

Tickets Still Available for St. Patrick's Day Roast at City Hall

Reserve your spot today to see some of Peabody's best known politicos crack wise about each other. Don't expect any blarney here, and there's breakfast to boot.

Mayor Bettencourt's office says there are still some tickets available for the city's first annual St. Patrick's Day Breakfast and Roast. Tickets will not be sold at the door, so reserve yours today. The morning of wisecracking and good food will take place March 16 in Wiggin Auditorium at City Hall from 9-11 a.m. The public is welcome to attend. “We have gotten a terrific response for this first St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast and Roast,” said Bettencourt. “Judging by the demand for tickets, this event is destined to become a longstanding Peabody tradition.” The event will also feature Irish music by the duo McGeney and Moore. Tickets are $30 each and all proceeds benefit the Haven from Hunger. “People can expect lots of laughter, song, and …

Why anyone would pay money to see the autocongratulatory group of "Peabody Insiders" carefully dance around The Truth in search of a laugh (and some votes) is beyond me. Haven from Hunger is a great charity -- I'd rather give the $30 directly to them!   more ›

City to Host First St. Paddy's Day Roast

All proceeds from the first annual roasting of Peabody politicos will benefit the city's food pantry.

[Editor's Note: Pardon our mulligan, if you will. Due to an editorial error, Mayor Ted Bettencourt's ethnic heritage was incorrectly stated -- he is in fact half-Irish and proud of it. And thanks to that family member who, partaking in some early light-hearted ribbing, called him up concerned he had denied his Irish roots upon seeing our initial report. "I told her I never would do that," he told Peabody Patch in good humor.] Stop by City Hall on St. Patrick's Day for a meal and some good-natured ribbing of Peabody's best known politicos in the grand tradition of Boston's Irish community. City councilor Tom Gould felt it was a shame there wasn't a forum in Peabody for elected city officials and other well known Peabodyites to crack wise …

VIDEO: St. Patrick's Day Breakfast — the Lighter Side of Politics

There were plenty of jokes and kind words for Peabody native and retiring state Sen. Fred Berry at state Rep. John Keenan's St. Patrick's Day Breakfast in Salem.

The jokes were all in good fun at state Rep. John Keenan's annual St. Patrick's Day Breakfast in Salem on Friday morning. And Peabody Sen. Fred Berry, who is retiring this year, was the subject of much of the good-natured ribbing and kind words. Berry, who has spent 30 years in the Senate, dropped a few zingers himself, at times cracking jokes at his own expense. Berry has cerebral palsy and is confined to a wheelchair. The breakfast, which attracted officials from various North Shore communities, was held at George Carey's FINZ on Pickering Wharf. Be sure to check out our video for some of the humor from the morning.

Readers Say AOH Best Place to Celebrate St. Paddy's

Since 1894, the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Peabody have had a few homes -- a storefront on Walnut Street, a meeting room on Foster Street and their current home on Lowell Street, which incidentally, used to be an Episcopal Church.

The results are in, and the best place to celebrate St. Paddy's in Peabody is with the Ancient Order of Hibernians, according to readers. The Irish-American club puts on an annual corned beef dinner, complete with dancing, music and song just for the occasion of St. Patrick's Day. The duo of McGeney and Moore, certainly a highlight, are getting ready for yet another night of entertainment. The AOH event won with 50 percent of the vote in our readers' poll. The selection of the winner is up to the discretion of the team here at Peabody Patch and we thank all those readers who came out to support their favorite places in the Tanner City. Check back first thing Monday for next week's poll, which is all about your favorite car mechanics.
