TELL US: Enjoying Your Freedom to Park on the Street All Night?

Residents are no longer faced with the city's annual overnight parking ban this winter -- it has been replaced with an emergency ban just for when a storm is imminent.

There was likely outright rejoicing in some corners of the city over the weekend, as for the first time, Peabody residents didn't have to pull their cars off the street. That's because there is no more winter parking ban. There hasn't been much snow yet either, and that was the point. City councilors struck down the annual ban this past spring, airing the same time-honored complaints about it, and then voted in a new emergency parking ordinance in September that utilizes blue lights and other means of public communication to notify residents of an impending storm and a parking ban. One question. Why is the Parking Clerk Department located in the police department? Clearly, that is a conflict on those folks who wish to contest a ticket. Having police in the building, discourages the alleged violator with having a fair and impartial hearing. Look around; none of the other communities are in the Police Station. Watch Out for Blue Lights This Winter: Council OKs Emergency Parking Ban

City moves ahead with new emergency weather ban. Prohibiting on-street parking will only be temporary in anticipation of a storm and while city crews clean up. Violators will face a $50 ticket and tow.

When the snow starts falling this winter in Peabody – meteorologists are at least predicting more snow this year than last – make sure to get your car off the street in a storm, otherwise you could shell out up to $140 between the ticket and towing fees. There’s also a $30 storage fee if you don’t pick your car up right away. The City Council approved a draft ordinance last Thursday for a new emergency weather ban, which replaces the annual winter parking ban councilors finally dissolved this past spring. The new parking restriction, which is similar to measures in Beverly, Salem and Lynn, only goes into effect when an actual storm is imminent – residents will see those blue lights around the city start flashing and notices will be sent …
