Responding to what it called a "fast-moving outbreak" of salmonella-caused sickness in at least 19 states including one in Massachusetts, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Friday that the company recall of nut butter products made by Sunland Inc. and sold under many labels has more than doubled to at least 240 products. The recall list includes several well-known brands and a variety of peanut butter products as well as almond butter, cashew butter, tahini and roasted blanched peanut products. This random list indicates the range: Not every container of the products in the list above or the much longer lists available from the FDA and from Sunland is affected. The recall is because of potentially-contaminated peanut butter sold in Starbucks Protein Bistro Boxes.
Starbucks and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have announced that Protein Bistro Boxes sold at Starbucks cafes in nearly 20 states are being recalled because of possible salmonella contamination. "Peanuts associated with the Sunland, Inc. recall were used in the production of certain lots of Justin's Honey Peanut Butter squeeze pack product and have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella," says the FDA. That particular peanut butter product is contained within a Protein Bistro Box at Starbucks. A peanut butter recall that began at Trader Joe's last weekend was expanded Monday to more than 100 peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter and Tahini and roasted blanched peanut products made by Sunland Inc.'s Portales, N.M. plant. The voluntary recall was initiated after reports of 30 people infected between June 11 and Sept. 2 with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Bredeney from 19 states possibly linked to the peanut and almond butter surfaced, according to news releases from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Three people in Massachusetts have contracted salmonella, 26 have fallen ill in other states and officials believe it may be related to peanut butter sold at Trader Joe's.
Health officials in several states, along with federal officials, are warning consumers one type of peanut butter sold at Trader Joe's is possibly contaminated with salmonella. In response to the widespread concerns, Trader Joe's announced Friday that "out of an abundance of caution" all Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter has been removed from store shelves everywhere, which would include at the Peabody location as well.
