Tentative plans are for a restaurant and some retail out in front of the Route 1 hotel.
Curious what's going up in front of the SpringHill Suites on Route 1? According to Ward 5 Councilor Dave Gamache, it may eventually turn into a restaurant with some storefronts. Gamache said he's had cursory discussions on the project, which tentatively looked at putting a high-end restaurant with retail on the 1.5-acre parcel at 47 Newbury St. He noted those plans may morph into some other commercial use by the time the project is complete. When the hotel was built in 2002, Gamache said, that parcel and the vacant one-acre plot next to it (also in front of the hotel) were slated for development, but those projects never materialized due to the economy. He said there was originally talk of bringing a Macaroni Grill to Peabody. He'd like to…

City officials are trying to come up with a solution to address problems at a Route 1 development.
City officials and the neighbors agree -- two abutting commercial and residential developments off Route 1 are a "disaster." "This is absurd, this is the worst active subdivision I've ever seen...as far as moving in the process in the correct steps," said Planning Board member Joseph Gagnon at a public hearing last week. Gagnon was astounded at what he perceived as utter disregard by developer Richard Marchese for obtaining proper permits and proper procedures for site work. "I'm very sympathetic with all the neighbors. I think you guys were harmed immensely. I'm emotional over it, that's how obvious and just how blatant it all is," he said. "It's like this builder decided to purchase this land and say what I can do to adversely affect …

Peabody officials issued a cease and desist order for a commercial project on Route 1 this week to deal with serious site runoff damaging neighbors' property.
City officials shut down construction at a commercial project on Route 1 this week after complaints were made by neighbors that their yards were being flooded by mud and silt from the work site whenever it rained. The property in question, owned by Richard Marchese, abuts Winona Street and sits off Route 1 behind the Royal Garden and a new multi-story commercial building at 130 Newbury St. It's a longstanding -- and controversial -- project that underwent numerous proposals over the years before the latest plan for a high-end used car lot. That proposal was part of a larger development plan for both 128 and 130 Newbury St. The Salem News reports that Mayor Ted Bettencourt issued a cease and desist order to Marchese after seeing evidence …

The popular local chain of bagel shops will be opening up its newest location later this summer.
Progress has crawled along for more than a year at the site of the new Bagel World on Route 1, but according to city officials, the popular local chain of eateries is preparing to pump out its famous bagels by the end of August. Building Commissioner Kevin Goggin said he met with the construction contractor Tuesday morning and spoke recently with the project architect as well, both of whom say plans are to open up shop within the next month. Goggin said the entire bakery operation may be moving over to 246 Newbury St. (it's on the southbound side of Route 1) from where the lone Peabody location is now at 10 Sylvan St. Owner Stanley Kantorosinski did not return a phone call for comment. Goggin said the interior plans for the Route 1 spot …

What are you most excited about with this new restaurant in Peabody?
Peabody's newest restaurant has been creating a buzz for years really, with fans of the original Salem establishment closely following the latest tidbits on the Route 1 development ever since it was first announced two summers ago. And now those fans' long-suffering is at an end -- Red's Kitchen & Tavern finally opens its doors today at 131 Newbury St. Red's, which is owned by John Drivas, came online earlier this year with a website and just last week hit Facebook. The official opening date was announced via Facebook on Mother's Day. This new version of the downtown Salem breakfast and sandwich shop also features dinner options on the menu (encompassing American, Greek and Mediterranean fare), seats 175 patrons, is open until 10 p.m. most…
