Retiring at 50: Could You Follow This Woman's Extreme Savings Plan?

Here's the story of Marlene Konkoly, who found creative ways to spend less and save more so she can retire at 50. This story is the first in our series about Extreme Savers.

Americans may be living longer, but our retirement plans aren’t keeping up. Which means people are living longer with smaller bank accounts. But Marlene Konkoly will retire at age 50. How did she do it? She contributes a whopping 45 percent of the gross annual income she earns as a procurement officer for an automotive finance company to her retirement—all while owning a home and remaining debt-free. Konkoly is actually well ahead of the retirement savings curve compared to many of her fellow Americans. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, fewer than half of Americans even know how much money they would need to retire. And nearly a third of employees who had access to a defined contribution plan such as a 401(k) did not participate …

Sapienza Lauded for 'Unforgettable Style' With Students and Colleagues

Sapienza lauded for helping countless students with "an unforgettable style," no-nonsense approach to teaching and being able to bridge gap between union and administration over the years.

For 40 years, Ed Sapienza has walked the halls of Peabody Veterans Memorial High School as a teacher and now approaches the end of his career as one of the most respected principals in the history of the school. Sapienza formally announced at Tuesday's School Committee meeting he plans to retire at the end of the school year. In a letter submitted to Interim Superintendent Dr. Herb Levine last week, Sapienza noted he was in the process of submitting paperwork to the Mass. Teachers' Retirement Board. “It’s been a great adventure with good experiences with the students, parents and staff and I am proud of the accomplishments,” said Sapienza in a one-on-one interview Tuesday night. Sapienza Announces Plans to Retire in June

Peabody High principal plans to retire at end of June after more than 40 years in the district.

Before he gets to ride off into the sunset this summer, Peabody's Interim School Superintendent Dr. Herb Levine will also be tasked with finding a new high school principal as well. The School Committee will vote Tuesday night on the contract for the district's new superintendent, Joseph Mastrocola, and now Peabody Veterans Memorial High School Principal Edward Sapienza says he plans to retire at the end of this school year. Sapienza submitted a letter to Levine and committee members last week, notifying them of his intention to retire from the Peabody Public Schools on June 30.
