Peabody Girls' Basketball Knocked Off By Methuen

The Tanners had the advantages going into the game, but fell to longtime playoff foe Methuen in the first round.

Unfortunately, the Peabody girls came up short Tuesday night at home against Methuen and were knocked from the playoffs once again. The final score was 59-39, Methuen, as the No. 4 ranked Tanners couldn't keep up the 13th seed Rangers. Peabody's Carolyn Scacchi was the team's high-scorer for the night with 11 points. The Salem News has more on Tuesday night's first round tournament game.

Peabody Girls' Hoops Headed to Playoffs

Girls' basketball, swimming and indoor track at Peabody High make strides in the postseason.

Peabody High girls' hoops is back on track after a couple straight seasons out of the state tournament bracket. The Tanners (16-4) are seeded 4th and host No. 13 Methuen (11-9) on Feb. 26 (7 p.m.). The last time Peabody qualified for the Division I North playoffs was 2010 and the Tanners were cleanly knocked from the tournament in the semi-final by Central Catholic. The Tanners didn't qualify in 2009, but again from 2006-2008 didn't make it far into the tournament. Stay tuned for more postseason news on boys' and girls' indoor track, but suffice it to say the boys made a clean sweep in the regular season (7-0) while the girls finished at 5-2, leading up to Saturday's All-State Meet at the Reggie Lewis Center. The Tanners' swimming and …

Peabody Playoff Update

Here's how Peabody High and Bishop Fenwick teams are doing in the postseason.

Peabody girls' soccer takes the home field Sunday (6 p.m.) for a re-match with Acton-Boxborough, which defeated Billerica on Saturday. Boys' soccer, however, saw its run come to an end in a first round loss to the Colonials Saturday, 2-0. In field hockey, the Tanners are also out with a loss to Newton North Friday, 2-1. Peabody High volleyball is slated to begin its tournament journey Monday (7 p.m.), hosting a quarterfinal game against Central Catholic, which blanked Lynn Classical Saturday. And coming up on Monday, Tanners' senior golfer Athan Goulos will compete in the Division I State Championship at Norton Country Club. For Bishop Fenwick, the volleyball squad advances to the quarterfinals after knocking out Swampscott, 3-0, Saturday…

PHOTOS: Fenwick Baseball Loses Heartbreaker to Lynnfield

Fenwick led 5-1 going into the last inning, but Lynnfield came back to score five runs in the inning, the last two on a bases loaded base hit with two outs and a two-strike count on the batter.

The Crusaders, with Peabody's Kevin Church on the mound, looked to have the ball game all wrapped up heading into the final inning, but that's just when the Pioneers batting order came alive. Bishop Fenwick saw its 5-1 lead quickly disintegrate and Lynnfield go up, 6-5, the last two runs scored on a single with bases loaded, two outs and two strikes on the batter. Lynnfield now advances to the Division III North Final Saturday against North Reading. Wednesday's heartbreaker in Lowell was the fourth straight year the Crusaders have been knocked from the tournament by Cape Ann League opponents -- Newburyport in 2009 and 2011 and Amesbury in 2010.

PHOTOS: Peabody Baseball Falls to Lynn English

The Tanners' bats fell silent on a rare day when pitcher Pat Ruotolo needed their help.

It was just two weeks ago that the Tanners' baseball club kept Lynn English at bay with solid pitching and a handful of runs, but this Sunday at home, even with ace Pat Ruotolo on the mound, the Peabody boys saw a complete reversal of that last game. Lynn English started things off with a run, but it wasn't until the eighth inning that the Bulldogs stretched the lead to five. Peabody finally batted in its lone run of the game thanks to a single from Matt McIsaac in the bottom of the ninth. Ironically, Lynn English was the 21st seed in the Division I North tournament while Peabody was No. 5 on a 16-6 season. That being said, the Salem News reports this is the third time in the last five seasons the Tanners' playoff run has been cut short by…

Girls' Lax Begins Tourney Journey Next Week

Both girls' lacrosse teams at Peabody High and Bishop Fenwick are in the state tournament, which begins next week.

The Peabody High girls' lacrosse team finished up its regular season Wednesday against Northeastern Conference opponent Marblehead with a tough loss, 13-12. And now heading into the postseason, the Lady Tanners are 11-5 overall (5-4 in the NEC). Playoff seedings were announced Thursday, pitting Peabody as the No. 13 seed against No. 4 North Andover (14-5) in a first round contest of the Division I North tournament May 30 (7 p.m.) in North Andover. If Peabody were to prevail, the next opponent would be either Masconomet (No. 5) or Beverly (No. 12). The Lady Tanners have not played the Scarlet Knights yet this season nor Masconomet, but did go 1-1 with Beverly. Peabody has made the tournament the past three years, but was knocked out early …
