How Much Snow Has Fallen in Peabody This Winter?

The answer is...

How much snow has fallen in Peabody so far this winter, you ask? 77.6 inches says Public Services Director Bob Langley. Tuesday's storm left Peabody covered in 9.5 inches of snow, said Langley, and that's not long after more than a foot buried Peabody on March 8. With scant reprieve since February's blizzard and a few more major storms in the past 1-1/2 months, the National Weather Service says this is the third snowiest February and March on record for the Boston area. Have no doubt, winter is officially over (the first day of Spring was March 20), but the snow, apparently, is not. Today's forecast calls for 1-3 inches of snow across the region this afternoon and evening. Peabody may only see an inch at most, according to the National …

More Snow and Rain Leading to Slick Evening Commute

Another 1-3 inches of snow is expected to accumulate by the evening commute, and mixed with more rain, road conditions will likely be slippery.

The evening commute may be just as slippery as this morning's, according to the latest forecast. The National Weather Service says Peabody can expect 1-3 more inches of snow to blanket the roads, along with sleet and rain, through 5 p.m. The Winter Storm Warning is now in effect until 6 p.m. "Untreated roads may become snow covered and slippery in the early evening rush hour, so drive with extra caution. The snow and sleet will become heavy for a time, so road conditions may quickly deteriorate," says the Weather Service. A mixture of snow, rain and sleet has steadily fallen all day long. Snow was heaviest this morning, coming down an inch per hour ar times. Unofficial snowfall reports mid-morning said 10 inches of snow had already fallen …

Slippery Morning Commute; Peabody May See 5-9 Inches of Snow

The Peabody area may say 5-9 inches of snow on Tuesday -- the snowfall is expected to turn to rain after 4 p.m.

Peabody may see closer to 5-9 inches of heavy snow and ice after this latest coastal storm is finished. The last hurrah -- hopefully -- of winter rolled in early this morning as expected and may not turn to rain until later in the afternoon. The National Weather Service says to expect heavy snow followed by sleet and freezing rain, causing some travel conditions for the morning commute. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect now until 8 p.m. The storm is expected to turn to all rain in Peabody after 4 p.m., leaving 3-5 inches of daytime snow accumulation, but may become snow again later in the evening. There is a small chance of snow tonight with flurries on Wednesday.  Snowfall across the region may range from 6-10 inches, says the Weather …

Another Snow Day May Push End of School Closer to July

The district has already used up it's five pre-scheduled snow days for the year, pushing the last day of school to June 25.

[UPDATE: School has been canceled for today and that means Peabody is now at six snow days for the year.] Each year, school officials plan for five snow days in the school calendar and shift the last day of school accordingly. Peabody and most other school districts in the area have already used up all five days between Hurricane Sandy blowing through in October, a blizzard in February and a surprise storm earlier this month. Now, with another significant storm threatening to drop 5-9 inches of snow today, superintendents are faced with the prospect of canceling school yet again and figuring out how to make up the day. It's nowhere near the predicament Peabody and other districts were faced with two years ago as heavy snow and ice kept …

Heavy Snow and Ice in Mix for Coming Storm

The Peabody area may say 3-7 inches of snow on Tuesday -- the snowfall is expected to turn to rain after 1 p.m.

Peabody may be in store for another 3-7 inches of heavy snow and ice Tuesday, based on the current predictions for the coming storm. The last hurrah -- hopefully -- of winter is expected to roll in from the coast around 2 a.m. and turn to rain after 1 p.m. on Tuesday. The National Weather Service says to expect heavy snow followed by sleet and freezing rain overnight, creating "treacherous" travel conditions for the Tuesday morning commute. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 9 p.m. Monday until 11 a.m. Tuesday over a large swath of Southern New England. Snowfall across the region may range from 4-8 inches, says the Weather Service, along with up to a tenth of an inch of ice and wind gusts up to 40 mph. Visibility may be down to a …

Peabody Crews Clear Away Surprisingly Severe Snowstorm

The snow storm picked in surprising intensity Friday morning, dumping more than a foot of snow on Peabody, prompting the cancellation of school.

Peabody was inundated again with more than a foot of snow in the latest storm to slam the region Friday morning. Tallies from the National Weather Service were around 13 inches, while numerous readers across the city reported measuring between 15 and 17 inches of snow. The Tanner City, along with the rest of the North Shore, was caught off-guard by the severity of the snowstorm, as forecast predictions right through Thursday still only called for 4-6 inches of snow at most. Public Services Director Bob Langley said the storm turned out to be a surprisingly tough one to deal with. He said it wasn't until Friday morning, even around 7:30, that the heaviest snow started falling. "It just kept snowing and snowing," he said. "There were some …

Storm May Bring Heavy Wet Snow, Strong Winds, Flooding to Peabody

A coastal storm, starting late Wednesday night, could dump heavy, wet snow and bring strong winds and possible flooding to Peabody between Thursday and Friday.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Peabody and much of Eastern Mass. in the coming days. A coastal flood warning has also been called. An ocean storm that's expected to pass well southeast of New England could generate heavy, wet snow and high winds and churn storm surges to 3 feet from late Wednesday night through Friday morning in the Peabody area. Coastal flooding is possible and in flood-prone areas. The storm watch will be in effect from Thursday morning through Friday morning. It is still early for forecasters to project snow totals for Peabody, but early estimates say 2-4 inches Thursday, although the storm could deliver 4-8 inches across the region. "Snow may be heavy at times starting early Thursday …
