[The following letter was submitted to Peabody Patch.] The 2013 senior class officers of Peabody High School held the first annual “A Taste of Peabody” pizza tasting on March 7 in the high school cafeteria. People purchased tickets and sampled slices of pizza from 12 different pizza shops around Peabody. Each pizza shop had a table with representatives and volunteers handing out their pizza. The pizza shops dished out all different kinds of pizza starting with the classic cheese pizza right up to wild flavors like buffalo chicken pizza. After people stuffed their faces with as much pizza as they could eat they voted on the best tasting pizza. Bettencourt Named Head Football Coach at Peabody High

Tanners' baseball coach Mark Bettencourt will be taking the reigns of the high school football team as well.

Peabody native Mark Bettencourt is the new head football coach at Peabody High. Athletic Director Phil Sheridan announced Thursday that Bettencourt, who is also the Tanners' head baseball coach, was hired this week after being recommended by a football coach search committee. The Salem News reports that Bettencourt was a finalist for the job back in 2008 when Scott Wlasuk was hired instead to lead the Tanners' football club. "The committee felt strongly that Mr. Bettencourt has the necessary skills and personal attributes that are needed in our football program right now. We believe that his passion, discipline, organizational skills and knowledge of both the game and our community uniquely qualify him as we move forward," said Sheridan in…

China to Peabody: Students on College Tour Visit PVMHS

A group of 46 Chinese students are paying a visit to Peabody Veterans Memorial High School today.

Forty-six students from the other side of the globe will be in Peabody today to glimpse the American high school experience. The group of Chinese high school students are actually touring colleges in the area, but thanks to a family connection, the group is making a detour to Peabody Veterans Memorial High School for a few hours. PVMHS Principal Ed Sapienza said the students will arrive around 10:30 a.m., meet and greet with some Peabody peers serving as ambassadors for the day, get their take on being a student at PVMHS, sit in on a couple classes, eat lunch with students and then depart around 1:30 p.m. "Hopefully they'll get a flavor of high school here," Sapienza said, adding that it's a great multicultural learning experience for his …

PVMHS Principal Finalists Would All Bring Wealth of Experience to Job

Public interviews of all three candidates are scheduled for Jan. 28-30 at the Kiley School.

All three finalists for the job of Peabody High Principal boast an impressive resume of experience in public education. Peabody native Eric Buckley, who is currently the assistant principal at PVMHS, has worked in the district for 22 years, starting out as a full-time substitute teacher. Except for a year as an eighth grade U.S. history teacher and cross country and track coach at Higgins Middle School, Buckley has spent his entire career at the high school in both teaching and administrative roles. He's also coached Little League, been a member of the Peabody Historical Society and a mainstay in the Peabody Relay for Life. Buckley, himself, is a cancer survivor. He was promoted to Assistant Principal in 2007 when Ed Sapienza was tapped to…

Three Finalists Named for Peabody High Principal Job

Among the finalists is current assistant principal Eric Buckley. The other two candidates are administrators from outside districts.

The pool of candidates to take the helm at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School has been narrowed down to three finalists. Superintendent Joe Mastrocola informed the School Committee Tuesday night that he would be publicly interviewing those candidates Jan. 28-30 at the Kiley School. The finalists recommended by the PVMHS principal screening committee are: Buckley, who has been the Assistant Principal at PVMHS for several years, is a Peabody native and graduate of Bishop Fenwick. He is also a cancer survivor. Mastrocola did not have resumes immediately available at Tuesday night's meeting on each candidate. He did, however, say he felt all three were "excellent candidates to move forward with" and praised the screening committee led by …

You can't compare Peabody to Lynnfield and North Reading. What is the median household income in Peabody compared to these cities? How much more do these cities pay teachers than in Peabody? Do these cities invest more in schools than Peabody does? All are factors that shouldn't be ignored. Putting in some "new guy" won't fix the problem. We have to change the culture of our city..which starts by…   more ›

Meet Katie Houlden, 'Defensive Specialist' ...in Volleyball

Peabody senior Katie Houlden and her Tanner teammates lost in the playoffs to Central Catholic, but she loved every minute competing for the volleyball team for the past four seasons.

For Peabody High's Katie Houlden, the libero on the girls’ volleyball team, going 17-2 this season wasn’t as much fun as she and her teammates had hoped. Unfortunately, the Tanners lost their 19th game of the season in the Division One North quarterfinals to Central Catholic, 3-1, ending their season. Peabody came in as the second overall seed, behind 20-0 Andover (the eventual state champs), before they bowed out. A match-up with the Golden Warriors for a state title didn’t happen. Houlden, who shared the Tanners' captaincy with fellow seniors Kim Sousa, Jen Pearl and Lauren Zaines, will have to wait until the spring lacrosse season starts to compete for Peabody again. Houlden plays attack on the lacrosse team and libero on the volleyball…
