Veteran Peabody educator and city native says leading the high school is a "big job," but he has great staff and students to work with and is excited to get started.
Tanner City native Eric Buckley will be the next principal at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School effective July 1. Schools Superintendent Joe Mastrocola announced the news at Tuesday night's School Committee meeting. The selection itself did not appear to come as a surprise to anyone -- Buckley is highly regarded in the district, where he has worked for the past 22 years. "It starts with the students. I've been so fortunate to have such good students along the way," Buckley reflected Tuesday night. He added, smiling: "I know Mr. Mayor, when I first started my career, you were sitting in C395 in the first row, I think it was the third seat." Bettencourt said after the meeting that the class was Contemporary Affairs and he and Buckley …

Mastrocola says he hopes to have new high school principal on board for July 1. Principal searches also underway for Carroll and South elementary schools.
Peabody Schools Superintendent Joe Mastrocola says the current pool of candidates for the high school principal job just confirms that it was the right decision last summer to keep Ed Sapienza on for one more year. Sapienza had retired in June, but then agreed to stay on for another year in an interim capacity, as a full-fledged effort was launched to find a permanent hire. Mastrocola declined to comment on the candidates thus far (the application deadline closed on Friday), other than to say the pool was competitive and contained qualified people for the job. He informed the School Committee Tuesday night that 13 people had applied and a screening committee, which also included five high school students, would narrow down that list and …

Peabody High principal plans to retire at end of June after more than 40 years in the district.
Before he gets to ride off into the sunset this summer, Peabody's Interim School Superintendent Dr. Herb Levine will also be tasked with finding a new high school principal as well. The School Committee will vote Tuesday night on the contract for the district's new superintendent, Joseph Mastrocola, and now Peabody Veterans Memorial High School Principal Edward Sapienza says he plans to retire at the end of this school year. Sapienza submitted a letter to Levine and committee members last week, notifying them of his intention to retire from the Peabody Public Schools on June 30. He said he is in the process of submitting paperwork to the Mass. Teachers' Retirement Board. "I would like to thank you and the Peabody School Committee for your …

We all know that this will be an "in house" or "old time Peabody" appointment. No new blood in this city! Mastrocola (asst super who leaves for a few years and returns as super), Levine (what a hack "consultant gig" he has with the city!), Sapienza ("retires" and then comes back for a year...cheating the pension system??) and Murtagh (what is an assistant superintendent do exactly? And how does …   more ›
