Girls' basketball, swimming and indoor track at Peabody High make strides in the postseason.
Peabody High girls' hoops is back on track after a couple straight seasons out of the state tournament bracket. The Tanners (16-4) are seeded 4th and host No. 13 Methuen (11-9) on Feb. 26 (7 p.m.). The last time Peabody qualified for the Division I North playoffs was 2010 and the Tanners were cleanly knocked from the tournament in the semi-final by Central Catholic. The Tanners didn't qualify in 2009, but again from 2006-2008 didn't make it far into the tournament. Stay tuned for more postseason news on boys' and girls' indoor track, but suffice it to say the boys made a clean sweep in the regular season (7-0) while the girls finished at 5-2, leading up to Saturday's All-State Meet at the Reggie Lewis Center. The Tanners' swimming and …

The Peabody High boys are still hunting for a win, while the girls handily won their season opener, and the Crusaders over at Bishop Fenwick are off to a solid start.
It's been a tough start to the season so far for the Peabody High boys' basketball team. The Tanners lost to non-league opponent Somerville Wednesday night at home, 60-49, and then suffered defeat against league rival Salem Friday night, 57-35. Next up for the boys is Beverly Tuesday (7 p.m.) on the Panthers home court. The girls' team, however, had just the opposite game against Salem, shutting down the Witches, 54-37, in the season opener. Carolyn Scacchi was the high scorer for Peabody with 14 points. The Panthers travel to Peabody Tuesday (7 p.m.). Bishop Fenwick girls' basketball was on the rebound Friday after losing to powerhouse league foe Archbishop Williams Tuesday, 43-27. The Crusaders, however, upended league foe Cardinal …

Phil Mitchell and 20 other former Tanners will be inducted into the Peabody High Hall of Fame this Friday.
Among the 21 Peabody High greats being inducted into the school's athletic hall of fame on Friday is Champions Pub owner Phil Mitchell. For him, baseball has always been a big part of life -- first as a player, then as a coach and now supporting local high school teams with his business. Mitchell didn't actually win a championship with the Tanners' baseball club, but the team came close his senior year in 1978 -- all the way to the Eastern Mass. Finals -- and he racked up some impressive statistics pitching and playing shortstop. In the tournament alone, Mitchell pitched three wins. Reflecting on his high school years, Mitchell said, he was fortunate to be on a very talented team. "I remember it like it was yesterday," he said. He added …

Peabody High senior Catarina Rocha wins NEC North Runner of the Year Award while cross country coach and dad Jose Rocha wins Coach of the Year. Carolyn Scacchi and Kara Digiacomo won MVP honors for volleyball and soccer, respectively.
You might say, "like father, like daughter." Peabody High senior Catarina Rocha won this year's Northeastern Conference North Girls' Runner of the Year Award for cross country while head coach and dad Jose Rocha won Coach of the Year. He does, however, have to share honors with Beverly girls' coach Dave Jellerson. Both the boys' and girls' squads also earned a share of the Sportsmanship Award along with Lynn Classical, Revere, Lynn English and Salem. The boys' North All-Stars include Tanners Drew Fossa, Ben Braz, Cody Picardy, Richie Fournier, Alex Marcus, Cody Jordan and James Christopher, while over on the girls' roster it's Catarina Rocha, Heather MacLean, Lauren Barrett, Sydney May, Sam Allen, Mary Leach and Antonia Pagliuca. Here's how Peabody High and Bishop Fenwick teams are doing in the postseason.
Peabody girls' soccer takes the home field Sunday (6 p.m.) for a re-match with Acton-Boxborough, which defeated Billerica on Saturday. Boys' soccer, however, saw its run come to an end in a first round loss to the Colonials Saturday, 2-0. In field hockey, the Tanners are also out with a loss to Newton North Friday, 2-1. Peabody High volleyball is slated to begin its tournament journey Monday (7 p.m.), hosting a quarterfinal game against Central Catholic, which blanked Lynn Classical Saturday. And coming up on Monday, Tanners' senior golfer Athan Goulos will compete in the Division I State Championship at Norton Country Club. PVMHS senior Athan Goulos has been working on becoming a top-notch golfer since his grandfather put a club in his hand when he was a little boy in his family's Peabody backyard.
Peabody senior Athan Goulos is an interesting athlete: in the fall, as a co-captain on the golf team, he tries to drive a little white ball as far as he can, then putt it a few inches; in the winter, he throws a 12-pound shot put as far as he possibly can for the Tanners' indoor track team. The 18-year-old lives on Lowell Street with his parents; his older brother Theo attends Bridgewater State University and older sister Andrea attends Wheelock College in Boston. Both Andrea and Theo graduated from PVMHS. Goulos was seven or eight years old when his grandfather John Parianos first exposed him to the game of golf in the family backyard in Peabody. “I’m a member at the Ferncroft Country Club in Middleton, and I really enjoy playing there …

Peabody girls' soccer continues unbeaten streak, defeating rival Danvers.
It was yet another fierce showdown Wednesday afternoon between soccer rivals Peabody and Danvers on the Tanners' home field. The Northeastern Conference opponents battled to a 3-1 win for Peabody, which now moves ahead to 10-0-0 for the season while Danvers falls to 8-2-2. Hayley Dowd and Kara Digiacomo scored the first two goals for Peabody, interrupted by Danvers' Meghan Kenny finding the net in the 50th minute of the game. It almost became a tied game thanks to Danvers' Kylie Plaza, but her shot to the net ended up being ruled out by a referee. Peabody's Victoria Digiacomo then made it 3-1 in the final minutes of the game.
