The 3rd Annual Peabody Police Awards Ceremony was held May 21 at City Hall and recognized 28 officers for their actions in incidents over the past year.

Twenty-eight officers were recognized Tuesday afternoon during the 3rd Annual Peabody Police Awards Ceremony at City Hall. They each received praise and an official commendation from Chief Robert Champagne for "exemplary" actions in the line of duty as individuals and for team efforts in several cases over the past year. Champagne said they are "everyday heroes." "These are the things that your officers, your family do every day to keep your city safe, to make life better for those who want to come here and live here, to work here, to play here," he said. The Peabody Police Department's 3rd Annual Commendation Awards Ceremony is Tuesday, May 21 at 4 p.m. at City Hall.

The department is once again joining the national "Click it or Ticket" initiative, leading up to Memorial Day later this month.

The Peabody Police Department joins the nationwide "Click it or Ticket" initiative again, starting Monday and lasting through Memorial Day weekend. So Chief Robert Champagne just urges everyone to buckle up -- it's for your own safety. Peabody and other numerous other local departments are partnering with the state police and Executive Officer of Public Safety and Security's Highway Safety Division on the 2013 seat belt enforcement mobilization from May 20 to June 2 and will be cracking down on motorists who are not belted. Police say that more than half of the 21,253 people killed in car crashes in 2011 were not wearing their belts, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Salem Men Charged With Peabody Robberies; One Armed, One Not

Police say an armed man stole a dog from a person and fled the scene in one incident Friday morning and then early the next morning, a man attacked and robbed a taxi driver on Route 1. Both men are Salem residents.

A Salem man was arrested Friday afternoon for allegedly stealing a dog at gunpoint in Peabody earlier in the day. A Salem man (but not the same man) was also arrested early Saturday morning for allegedly attacking and robbing a taxi driver on Route 1 in Peabody. The Salem News reports the first man was taken into custody at gunpoint as he was ordered out of his car by Salem police. According to the paper, Adolfo Tejeda Jr., 28, of 6 Heritage Dr., Salem, was charged with armed robbery, carrying a firearm without a license, unlawful possession of ammunition, possession of a Class D drug with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm during a felony, two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a large capacity feeding …

Saia, NEMLEC SWAT Team at Scene of Tsarnaev's Capture

Veteran Peabody officer Mark Saia was deployed with a SWAT team from NEMLEC and spent most of Friday combing Watertown for the second bombing suspect until he was finally captured that night.

Peabody police officer Mark Saia says he could hear Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s screams of pain as he was pulled out of the boat he was hiding in Friday night – that’s how close Saia was to the 19-year-old bombing suspect at the close of the manhunt in Watertown.  Saia, a SWAT team member with the North Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council, tells the Salem News he was deployed early that morning after MIT police officer Sean Collier was gunned down in his cruiser and a wild shootout and manhunt ensued in Watertown for the Tsarnaev brothers. Saia, 49, is one of five Peabody officers who serve on different teams within NEMLEC, which is represented by 53 police and sheriff’s departments. Peabody Officers Part of Massive Manhunt in Watertown

Swat forces and rapid-response teams combing Watertown Friday included several Peabody officers assigned to NEMLEC.

Peabody police officers assigned to a regional taskforce of specialists were part of the massive manhunt Friday for the remaining suspect in Monday's bombing at the Boston Marathon. The Salem News reports that Peabody officers and other North Shore representatives in the North Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council were among teams that went house-by-house in Watertown searching for 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. In fact, Detective Eric Ricci was apparently present or involved in the shootout in Watertown early that morning that resulted in the death of the older suspect, 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev, reports the Salem News. Peabody Officers Witness Overwhelming Support From All Over the World

Ten veteran Peabody officers assisted the Boston police Thursday with traffic control and logistical challenges during the interfaith prayer service for the victims of the marathon bombings. The service was attended by President Obama and the First Lady.

Ten Peabody police officers were among a contingent of uniformed volunteers Thursday morning assisting the Boston Police Department with traffic control and other logistical challenges presented during a prayer service for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama flew in for the service, which was drew hundreds of locals and other dignitaries and was held at Church of the Holy Cross in the South End. The Obamas also spoke with victims at Boston hospitals. Peabody Police Part of North Shore Contingent in Boston

Local officers who are part of a region-wide organization of specialists headed into Boston earlier this week to provide assistance.

Among the contingent of North Shore police officers who responded to Boston in the wake of Monday's bombing were Peabody Chief Robert Champagne and the department's liaisons to NEMLEC. The North Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council is comprised of 53 police and sheriff's departments in Essex and Middlesex counties. Soon after the explosions Monday afternoon, Boston police requested assistance mainly with crowd control at the blast scene and providing security at local hospitals treating the victims. The Salem News reports Champagne and Salem Police Chief Paul Tucker, who are on the executive board for NEMLEC and the Mass. Major City Chiefs Association, were briefed on the incident by Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis. Four …
