That section of 114 is an extremely dangerous section of road. From Buttonwood lane to Violet Road is single lanes only in both directions. Next time you drive that way check as the 2 lanes north bound end at the Left turn only lane at Buttonwood lane and South bound at Chandlers. The City has never painted double lanes on the section of road. Its just not wide enough for 4 lanes.   more ›

SUV Crash Snaps Utility Pole, Causes Power Outage, Traffic Backup

A SUV driven by a Boxford teenager crashed into an utility pole on Route 114 on Tuesday evening, sending wires down and cutting electricity for a time.

The electric wires that came down on Route 114 on Tuesday night were due to a sport utility vehicle that crashed into an utility pole, according to Peabody police. The crash occurred at about 6:15 p.m. in front of Maddy’s Car Wash, just east of the Danvers town line. One utility pole in font of the car wash snapped off at the top, dropping utility wires down to just a few feet off the road. The next pole to the west, near Outback Steakhouse, also bent down toward the road. The crash happened when a Ford Escape, driven by Amanda Monteforte, 18, of Boxford, was heading east on Route 114 at the Danvers-Peabody line, said Peabody Police Sgt. Robert Waugh. The SUV left the road and struck the pole. “That caused the next pole in line to snap,” …

I think she is lucky it was just a pole....but for a different reason. Because, IF she was driving distracted and hit (or God forbid, killed) someone else it would be an absolute tragedy (which she would have, rightfully, spent some time in jail for). I am glad that she is okay too...but I'm even more glad that some innocent motorist/pedestrian was spared from her careless driving. People need to…   more ›

Peabody police have made an arrest in an assault and purse snatching that took place on Endicott Street around 12:30 a.m. on Thursday. Peabody Detective Michael Crane said the 22-year-old woman called police, reporting she had been walking along the street when she was accosted by a tall, dark-skinned man wearing a gray, hooded sweatshirt. She said she fell to the ground at one point and dropped her purse, which the thief grabbed. The male then fled on foot down the street. Crane said the woman did not report any injuries and no weapon was shown during the robbery. A state police K-9 unit assisted in a search for the suspect, but was unable to pick up his trail. LETTER: City, FD Thank All for 'Outpouring' of Support After Firefighter's Death

Fire Department and city says thanks, especially to Peabody community, for "quick, compassionate and caring" response in wake of Firefighter James Rice's death in the line of duty.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. On Dec. 23, 2011, we tragically lost our beloved brother Firefighter James Rice in the line of duty. Our efforts immediately concentrated on caring for Jim’s wife, Amy, and their three children: Alyssa, Katelyn, and Ryan. The Rice family provided amazing strength to us during this time. As news of Jim’s passing spread across our fine city, the residents of Peabody united in strength. Immediately there was an outpouring of support at the fire stations. Donations to the Rice family and those affected by the fire at 5 Hancock St. streamed into the stations, banks and credit unions opened funds to support those in need, and businesses collected items and donated funds. Signs and banners decorated our …
