Rocha Again Named Gatorade Runner of the Year

For the second year in a row, Gatorade names Peabody's Catarina Rocha the best girls' cross country runner in the state, both for athletic and academic excellence, along with exemplary character.

Earning the high honor for a second straight year, Peabody High's Catarina Rocha was named the Gatorade Runner of the Year for girls' cross country in Massachusetts. The prestigious award, which is in its 28th year, is given to a top athlete from each state across 12 varsity sports. Rocha, a 5-foot-4 senior, is wrapping up her high school career with high marks -- she finished 2nd in the Foot Locker Nationals last month, won the Northeast Regional race before that and won her second straight cross country state title. She also led her fellow Tanners to a Division I team state title, is a member of the National Honor Society, volunteers locally and an "A" student in the classroom. “Catarina Rocha is an exceptional runner,” said Lisa Owen, …

A pair of official road signs declare Peabody home of the PVMHS Girls Cross Country All State Champions. Team members also received special individual citations from the mayor as well.

The Peabody High girls' cross country team now has its own pair of road signs in the Tanner City. Mayor Ted Bettencourt invited the team down to City Hall last week to formally congratulate the young ladies on their recent Division I state championship and unveil the new road signs, which are becoming a tradition now for state champions in Peabody under Bettencourt's tenure. Bettencourt told the team he's proud to recognize the positive milestones -- the great things -- the city's youth are reaching when oftentimes much of the public focus tends to be on the negative. He added that a central focus for his time in office is precisely in promoting the good things coming out of Peabody. "We have a lot of talent in this city and...more and …

Rocha an All-American

Catarina Rocha says she's taking a well-deserved, if short, break from running after placing 7th at the Foot Locker Cross Country National Championships. She'll be back running indoor track soon enough.

Peabody's Catarina Rocha competed against 39 of the best female high school runners in the country and placed 7th in the Foot Locker Cross Country National Championships Saturday at Balboa Park in San Diego, Calif. Breaking the top 10, gave her All-American status. "It feels great," Rocha said. "There are 10 girls from each region: West, Midwest, Northeast (which I'm in), and South. It's only my second year running cross country. Freshman year, I [played] varsity soccer." The course was 3.1 miles and Rocha covered it in just 17:38, an improvement from her performance at last year's national championships -- 18:34 minutes in 31st place. Her uncle, Fernando Braz, the track coach at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School, noted her performance…
