D.J. Henrick continues to make history for the Peabody High varsity wrestling program.
Peabody High track stars Catarina Rocha and Zach Grube aren't the only ones headed to compete with the best of the best in New England later this week. Senior and three-sport athlete D.J. Henrick also qualified for the New England Wrestling Championships, which are being held Friday and Saturday in Providence, R.I., after placing 6th in the All-State Meet on Feb. 26 at Salem High School. Henrick now has the distinction of not only winning the first sectional title for a Peabody wrestler, but also the first to place in the state meet and to advance to New Englands. Division I meets this Sunday for indoor track and swimming.
Heading into this Sunday’s Division I Indoor Track Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center, Peabody High runners are ranked fairly highly. Senior Zachary Grube is seeded 5th in the boys’ 55-meter hurdles at 7.91, while fellow senior Nat Gaye has top billing in the 55-meter dash at 6.6 seconds. Meanwhile, senior Nick Christensen is the favorite in the mile, having actually run faster during the season (4:12.7) than the current meet record (4:13.56) set by Xaverian’s Mark Amirault in 2006. Christensen, likewise, is a top runner in the 2-mile (9:26.4), neck-and-neck with Weymouth’s Nolan Parsley (9:26.33). Grube is also No. 3 in the high jump at 6-6. Equally a force on the wrestling mat as the football field, D.J. Henrick captures first ever divisional state tournament title for Peabody wrestling program.
Peabody High wrestler D.J. Henrick made history for the Tanners this past weekend, taking home the Division I North Sectional crown in his weight class. The 220-pound senior captured the league title the week before, only losing one match during the season, and came into the Sectional meet seeded No. 2. This is only the second year since the wrestling program was granted varsity status -- it was a junior varsity/club team the year before that. The Tanners' co-ed wrestlers are led by coach Dave Henrick, Sr. The Salem News reports that the younger Henrick won four matches on Saturday in Chelmsford to advance to this weekend's state meet in Weymouth. Anchored by heavyweights Tony Catalano and D. J. Henrick, the Tanners came back from early match defeats.
The Tanners stormed the mats at home at Peabody High Wednesday, after finishing fifth in the first ever Northeastern Conference Dual Meet on Saturday to open the wrestling season. The Peabody wrestlers pinned Marblehead, 54-19, for the win. Peabody next visits Beverly on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
