Peabody Girls' Hoops Headed to Playoffs

Girls' basketball, swimming and indoor track at Peabody High make strides in the postseason.

Peabody High girls' hoops is back on track after a couple straight seasons out of the state tournament bracket. The Tanners (16-4) are seeded 4th and host No. 13 Methuen (11-9) on Feb. 26 (7 p.m.). The last time Peabody qualified for the Division I North playoffs was 2010 and the Tanners were cleanly knocked from the tournament in the semi-final by Central Catholic. The Tanners didn't qualify in 2009, but again from 2006-2008 didn't make it far into the tournament. Stay tuned for more postseason news on boys' and girls' indoor track, but suffice it to say the boys made a clean sweep in the regular season (7-0) while the girls finished at 5-2, leading up to Saturday's All-State Meet at the Reggie Lewis Center. Shea Sisters Swim at States, Marking One of Best Seasons for Tanners

Senior captain Julie Shea also leaves behind a new girls' career points record on the team.

The Shea sisters capped off one of the best seasons the Peabody High swim team has had in seven years this past weekend at the Division I State Championships, according to mom and coach Maureen Shea. Senior captain Julie Shea and sophomore Christine Shea were the only two to qualify for the state meet -- Julie in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke and Christine joining her in the breaststroke. Julie placed 14th in the 200 IM and 18th in the 100 breaststroke, while Christine was close behind in 20th. Coach Shea said another highlight of the season is that Julie Shea also leaves behind a new girls' career team record of 694 points (Julie scored her last three at the state meet at Harvard University). Tanners in the Postseason

Division I meets this Sunday for indoor track and swimming.

Heading into this Sunday’s Division I Indoor Track Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center, Peabody High runners are ranked fairly highly. Senior Zachary Grube is seeded 5th in the boys’ 55-meter hurdles at 7.91, while fellow senior Nat Gaye has top billing in the 55-meter dash at 6.6 seconds. Meanwhile, senior Nick Christensen is the favorite in the mile, having actually run faster during the season (4:12.7) than the current meet record (4:13.56) set by Xaverian’s Mark Amirault in 2006. Christensen, likewise, is a top runner in the 2-mile (9:26.4), neck-and-neck with Weymouth’s Nolan Parsley (9:26.33). Grube is also No. 3 in the high jump at 6-6. Peabody Takes Witches in the Pool in Nail-Biter

Shea sisters, Melville and Guay stand out in the pool to win meet with Salem.

The Peabody Tanners swimming and diving teams improved to 2-1 for the season after squeaking past Salem Thursday night, 90-86, in a home meet at the Torigian Family YMCA. Head coach Maureen Shea reports the 200-yard medley relay team of sisters Julie and Christine Shea, Zack Melville and Alex Guay took first place, while Christine Shea won the 200 freestyle, and sister Julie won the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke. The Tanners swimming and diving squads travel to Danvers next Tuesday (5 p.m.) to take yet another Northeastern Conference opponent, the Falcons.

[PHOTOS] Peabody Swimmers Open Season Against Powerhouse Beverly

New coach Maureen Shea drew a short straw by facing the class of the Northeastern Conference in her inaugural meet.

Opening the season in home waters on Thursday, Peabody had to go up against a tough opponent in the Panthers. Beverly took the meet, 92-83. Michelle Manfra won the diving portion for Peabody (177.075), Alex Guay was the team's top score and sisters Christine and Julie Shea both qualified for state competition in the 100m breaststroke and 100m backstroke, respectively. The Tanners visit Lynn English Tuesday (6:30 p.m.) before the Christmas break.
