The Tanners had the advantages going into the game, but fell to longtime playoff foe Methuen in the first round.
Unfortunately, the Peabody girls came up short Tuesday night at home against Methuen and were knocked from the playoffs once again. The final score was 59-39, Methuen, as the No. 4 ranked Tanners couldn't keep up the 13th seed Rangers. Peabody's Carolyn Scacchi was the team's high-scorer for the night with 11 points. Girls' basketball, swimming and indoor track at Peabody High make strides in the postseason.
Peabody High girls' hoops is back on track after a couple straight seasons out of the state tournament bracket. The Tanners (16-4) are seeded 4th and host No. 13 Methuen (11-9) on Feb. 26 (7 p.m.). The last time Peabody qualified for the Division I North playoffs was 2010 and the Tanners were cleanly knocked from the tournament in the semi-final by Central Catholic. The Tanners didn't qualify in 2009, but again from 2006-2008 didn't make it far into the tournament. The Peabody High boys are still hunting for a win, while the girls handily won their season opener, and the Crusaders over at Bishop Fenwick are off to a solid start.
It's been a tough start to the season so far for the Peabody High boys' basketball team. The Tanners lost to non-league opponent Somerville Wednesday night at home, 60-49, and then suffered defeat against league rival Salem Friday night, 57-35. Next up for the boys is Beverly Tuesday (7 p.m.) on the Panthers home court. The girls' team, however, had just the opposite game against Salem, shutting down the Witches, 54-37, in the season opener. Carolyn Scacchi was the high scorer for Peabody with 14 points. Conference opponent Swampscott pulled off a narrow victory on the Peabody girls at home on Friday night, 44-39.
The Lady Tanners fell to 4-5 after they couldn't pull past a determined Swampscott squad Friday night in Peabody, despite several chances to do so. The Big Blue was up on the Peabody girls most of the game with a narrow margin and ended the fourth quarter, 44-39. A high point for the night, despite the loss, was Carolyn Scacchi's 11 points and 12 rebounds. Katie Brunelle led the Lady Tanners in scoring with 18. Peabody travels to Danvers on Friday (7 p.m.) after a week break.

A buzzer beating three-pointer by Alexandra Lomasney sent Peabody to overtime and a win over Beverly.
The Lady Tanners went 2-0 Friday night after defeating Beverly in the Garden City. Peabody came back from a growing deficit late in the fourth quarter to push the game into overtime on a three-pointer at the buzzer by Alexandra Lomasney. The Peabody girls then held onto the lead at the end of OT, 53-51 -- their second early win against conference opponents. Peabody plays at Lynn Classical Tuesday (7 p.m.) then hosts Lynn English on Friday (7 p.m.).

Taylor Provost scored 10 points to lead the Tanners to a 45-31 win.
Peabody girls' basketball opened its season Tuesday night at home with a rout on conference opponent Salem. Senior captain Taylor Provost led the scoring for the Lady Tanners at 10 points in the 45-31 win, which also saw a strong game from sophomore Carolyn Scacchi. It wasn't that sure of a win early on in the game, however, with Peabody only up 23-18 at the half. The Lady Tanners are hoping to improve on a 7-10 run from last season (6-8 NEC), which left them without a berth in the postseason. Peabody now plays at Beverly on Friday (7 p.m.).
