Gamache to Step Down After 24 Years on City Council

Nomination papers for this fall's municipal election will be available from the City Clerk's office, starting March 11.

Nomination papers won't be available for another six weeks yet, but there are already four candidates who have emerged for this fall's city election, and only two of them are incumbents. Bettencourt is only the city's 14th mayor since 1917 – the late Peter Torigian had the record by far with 23 years in the corner office and Bettencourt's predecessor Michael Bonfanti spent a full decade in office. You have to go back to the 1950s to find an incumbent mayor who lost a race. Bettencourt also says being Mayor is a childhood dream come true for him. He released an announcement Wednesday, confirming…

I have to agree with the "positive mojo" here in the city. For the first time, there's hope we can turn around the downtown from looking like the outskirts of Lawrence to what it should look like. I see true leadership in this guy. Because of that, I comment on his affiliation with fringe groups like MAIG, and his support of creepy congressmen who never should have been re-elected, as …   more ›
