Sizing up this weekend's local football action. Last week: 4-0; Season: 33-7.
If the Peabody Tanners are looking for a secret weapon to help them finally put an end to a five-game losing skid Friday night in Lynn they might have to look no further than down to their cleats, which for a change will be visible and not submerged in a layer of mud. The pristine field turf of the new Manning Field will indeed be a sight for sore eyes for the Tanners, especially their explosive backfield of Nat Gaye, Jason Hiou and D.J. Henrick. Last Friday, the trio was left spinning their wheels in the quaking bog otherwise known as Coley Lee Field in a 35-10 loss to North Andover. Peabody managed just 16 yards on the ground in the first half and just 73 yards in total. “We love our field here, but it’s tough to get to the outside and …

Sizing up this weekend's local football action. Last week: 4-0; season: 29-7.
Coming off their inspired effort against one of the top teams in the league – Lynn English – the Peabody Tanners will play host to the team many consider to be the class of the new fangled CAL/NEC Tier 1 when the Scarlet Knights of North Andover invade Coley Lee Field Friday night at 7 p.m. After dropping their first game to arch-rival Andover, the No. 18 ranked Knights (7-1, 2-0) have won their last seven, including league victories over Lynn Classical, 42-6, and last week over Revere, 34-6. North Andover also had quality wins over Reading (5-3) and Westford Academy (4-4) by healthy margins. NA averages a league best 32.8 points a game and allows just 9.1 a contest, also a league best. Brandon Walsh (11 TD passes) is one of the top …

Checking in on the local football action in Week No. 7. Last week: 3-2; season: 22-6.
Last week’s huge win by Masconomet over Beverly only further cemented the respect Scott Wlasuk already had for the 3-3 Chieftains who entertain 3-2 Peabody Friday night in West Boxford in a huge NEC/CAL Tier 1 tilt. Initially, that respect was instilled in the Peabody coach by simply turning on his DVD player. “When I put the game tape in I thought I made a mistake and put in an ESPN college game, because I saw this big kid for them making plays on both sides of the ball,” said Wlasuk with a chuckle, speaking of the Chieftains’ 6-foot-3, 230-pound fullback and linebacker Kurt Hunziker, who headlines a large and physical Chieftains squad. “They have some good size and you can tell that they are tough, aggressive kids,” said Wlasuk, who is …

Setting the table for your weekend football feast. Last week's picks: 7-0. Season: 7-0.
Go figure. Just when the Tanners are on their most prolific roll in years, the schedule maker hits them with a week off. While it is indeed not the best scenario for a red-hot club, if there’s one club Peabody coach Scott Wlasuk and his staff would like an extra week to prepare for it would have to be the mighty Fishermen of Gloucester. (Peabody travels to Gloucester next Friday, Sept. 30.) “I had gone back and forth on whether or not to try to fill it,” said Wlasuk of the early bye. “I just thought that with our numbers low it gives us the opportunity to get a couple of these guys healed and Gloucester is going to be a heck of a challenge.” While Peabody is off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2004, Gloucester is 0-2 and the last …

Peabody hosts Danvers Friday at 7 p.m., both teams hungry for a winning streak early in the season.
You have to go all the way back to 2004 to find the last time that the Peabody football team got off to a 2-0 start, while Danvers (2005, 2009) has done it just twice in that span. One of those streaks will come to an end Friday night at Coley Lee Field, however, when the two 1-0 teams collide. The Tanners posted a quick 14 points against Salem and then turned things over to a very tenacious defense, which held off a dangerous Witches attack down the stretch in a riveting, 14-13, win in their opener. Danvers, meanwhile, posted an 18-8 win at Winthrop, which was even more dramatic. After waiting better than an hour for the game to begin thanks to a referee scheduling snafu, Danvers had to wait another three quarters to see the Falcons get …
