[The following was submitted by North Shore Community Action Programs.] One hundred people turned out Nov. 14 for the Annual Meeting and Award Ceremony celebrating the 47th year of North Shore Community Action Programs (NSCAP). The anti-poverty agency presented its annual Senator Frederick E. Berry Community Service Award to Beverly Bootstraps, an organization that, in the words of Acting Executive Director Laura M. MacNeil, has had “a big impact on the citizens of Beverly.” The Senator Frederick E. Berry Community Service Award was established in recognition of Senator Berry’s inspiring leadership and his dedication to improving the lives of low-income families and individuals. Senator Berry will retire at the end of this year, after …

The new acting director wants to change that as she leads the anti-poverty agency forward.
Reflecting on her new job, Laura MacNeil talks more about being excited for North Shore Community Action Programs and the programs the anti-poverty agency has up and running. NSCAP's board of directors named MacNeil the acting director of the nonprofit organization last month. NSCAP, which is based in downtown Peabody, is the leading anti-poverty agency in the area and offers all sorts of programs for residents in need, from fuel assistance to job skills workshops. There are more than 130 people on staff in various capacities. "Sometimes I feel like we're the best kept secret on the North Shore," said MacNeil, who has been the deputy director at NSCAP for six years. NSCAP serves Peabody, Salem, Beverly and Danvers as well as several other …

The Peabody-based nonprofit announced that Laura MacNeil was promoted as Acting Executive Director earlier this month.
The area's designated anti-poverty agency, North Shore Community Action Programs, announced today that Deputy Director Laura MacNeil has been promoted to lead the agency on a provisional basis. NSCAP is based out of downtown Peabody and also serves Salem, Beverly and Danvers as well as many other surrounding cities and towns. As the designated anti-poverty agency for the area, NSCAP does receive and administers government funding for various programs. The announcement made no mention of Elizabeth Hogan, who has been the executive director at NSCAP for 17 years and largely the public face of the organization during that time. A subsequent email from a staff member explained Hogan left in July. The announcement said MacNeil was made Acting …

[The following was submitted by North Shore Community Action Programs.] Anthony J. Giglio was a man with a plan. A Realtor in Woburn and the North Shore for more than three years, he saw an opportunity to take his career to the next level by owning his own agency. Through hard work, adherence to a business plan and a disciplined approach to saving -- with help from NSCAP’s Individual Development Account program -- he realized his dream this year. Today, Giglio and his business partners Roland and Gale Spadafora are the proud owners of RE/MAX Legacy on Pleasant Street in Woburn. “The former owner had decided to close the office down,” Giglio explains. “But the three of us didn’t want to leave the real estate market in Woburn. We came up …

[The following was submitted by North Shore Community Action Programs.] Marisa Wall beams as she takes the final walk-through of her new condo right before closing on the sale. Clearly, she has worked hard to reach this milestone of homeownership. But she is grateful, too, for the help of Deborah Grace of North Shore Community Action Programs (NSCAP) and the savings-match program she participated in through NSCAP. “Homeownership was something I thought I wouldn’t be able to accomplish until later in my life, certainly not at 29. I didn’t know where to start. With the guidance and overwhelming support of Deborah Grace (my go-to person and confidante) who runs the Individual Development Account (IDA) program at NSCAP, I found the home buying…

The Peabody-based nonprofit is offering free tax preparation services once again through April 14 at centers in Peabody and Beverly.
Do you know what Earned Income Tax Credit is? The Internal Revenue Services indicates that one out of five eligible taxpayers don't, even though they're entitled to claim it on their yearly tax return and substantially increase their tax deductions. The EITC has come to be regarded as the nation’s largest federal anti-poverty program, created in 1975 to help the "working poor" keep more of what they earn, according to North Shore Community Action Programs. The Peabody-based nonprofit is calling attention to the tax credit and the sixth annual Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day on Jan. 27. “The Earned Income Tax Credit puts money that they have already earned back in the pockets of working families, people we know are struggling right …

North Shore Community Action Programs offers some free jobs-readiness programs to its clients, who are actively seeking to enter the workforce.
Forty-five eager job seekers sifted through racks of donated clothes and listened intently to free fashion advice on professional attire and appearance last week at the Family Center for North Shore Community Action Programs. NSCAP, which is based in Peabody, runs the Ready to Work day of fashion as another free resource for its out-of-work or underemployed clients. Those who attended last week's session looked through business outfits suitable for interviews or on the job itself, while fashion advisors gave some tips on what to wear and how to do so on a tight budget, says Kim Lundgren of NSCAP. She said some of those clients are involved in another of NSCAP's job readiness programs, Transition to Work, which serves former homeless …

North Shore Community Action Programs Executive Director Beth Hogan says a recent report released by the State Auditor’s office is misleading in its claims of improper use of public funds by the nonprofit agency. Hogan said on Tuesday that the audit, which was conducted two years ago, only addresses accounting questions, finding fault at how NSCAP’s books are managed in certain areas, which she in turn believes other accounting professionals would disagree with. “There’s no wrongdoing, no fraud, no [large-scale] misappropriation of funds,” she said. “These are just process and procedural issues.” “All we’re trying to do is make sure poor people get what they need to survive,” Hogan said. The audit was publicly released by State Auditor …
