IMAGE GALLERY and VIDEO: Peabody Track Improves to 2-0 with Wins over Marblehead

The Peabody track teams remained unbeaten in the winter season, as they improved to 2-0 with wins over Marblehead.

It was a battle of two track powers on Monday as the Marblehead Magicians took on the Peabody Tanners at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School. When the final gun had sounded, the Tanners took away wins in both the boys and girls competitions, with 52-34 and 46-40 scores respectively. The girls meet was a back and forth battle as both teams dominated certain events, but in the end it was Peabody's ability to take more first place finishes that made the difference. The home team swept both of the field events, as Amanda Nielsen (4'8"), Sarah May (4'6"), and Catarina Rocha (4'6") went 1-2-3 in the high jump, and Pamela Zabala (29'11"), Lauren Zaimes (27'5"), and Lea Qirjazi (27'3") took the top three spots in the shot put. Tanners Girls Ice Hockey Look to Gain Respect and Wins This Winter

The Peabody High varsity girls ice-hockey team has seen its share of tough times, but hope springs eternal for a winning season.

Looking at the Peabody High varsity girls' ice-hockey record over the past two seasons, a winless 0-20, it would be easy to overlook the team in 2010-11. But head coach Larry Minehan remains positive about the Lady Tanners chances at turning things around this year. "I have optimism that we will be better this year than the last two," said Minehan, who is in his fifth season with the program that started as an intramural club in 2005. "I have six new players that all have hockey experience at the youth level. I also have 15 seniors on the team this year and they all started hockey as freshman." Coach Minehan expects senior defenseman Lyndsay Konovalchik to be an impact player this season. Konovalchik, who was voted to the North Cape All-…

Peabody High Girls’ Basketball Ready to Fight Back to MIAA Tournament

The Peabody High girls’ basketball team has been successful over the past few years, making postseason appearances in three of the last four MIAA Division I North tournaments.

Success has been a trend for the Peabody High girls' basketball team -- making postseason appearances in three of the last four MIAA Division I North tournaments, only failing to earn a bid in 2008-09. In the 2006-07 season, the Lady Tanners (16-3) were Greater Boston League champs, earning the third seed in the DI-North tourney and a first-round bye. The team's tournament was short lived though, as they fell 53-38 in the quarterfinals to sixth-ranked Central Catholic, the eventual sectional champions and state finalists. The 2007-08 season followed a similar path for the Peabody girls (16-6), as they were league champs once again, competing in the Northeastern Conference- Large for the first time, earning the fifth seed in the DI-North …
