State and local police were searching for a male Tuesday afternoon who led them on a chase down Route 1 in a stolen pickup truck and then bailed on foot in West Peabody.
A man driving a stolen pickup truck led police on a chase down Route 1 and into a residential neighborhood in West Peabody this afternoon, drawing a large police presence to the area. A manhunt that lasted about an hour was finally called off around 1:30 p.m., according to reports. The chase, led by state police troopers, was first reported around noon on the southbound side of the highway in Danvers near Centre Street. The vehicle, a blue 2006 Ford 150, continued into Peabody and left the highway onto Winona Street. Troopers and K9 units, assisted by Peabody and Lynnfield officers, began a manhunt in the area after the vehicle was found empty on Cardigan Road. A state police helicopter also joined the search. State police say two teens were arrested Wednesday night after leading troopers and local officers on a foot chase near Spinelli's off Route 1. The pair was charged with car theft and resisting arrest.
State police say it was thanks to a Good Samaritan that officers tracked down a stolen car and two suspects in Peabody Wednesday night. An alert was broadcast by the state police barracks in Newbury for patrols to be on the lookout for a stolen 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser. Around 7:30 p.m., a Good Samaritan then called state police after spotting the car pull into Gaeta's Gas & Towing on Route 1 South and the two occupants flee on foot toward Spinelli's. A chase ensued with state troopers and local police officers searching outside the function facility and woods around Suntaug Lake for about an hour-and-a-half before finding the suspects hiding in a Dumpster behind Spinelli's. If you spot a state trooper camped out by the side of the road somewhere in Essex County this weekend, he or she may be doing more than just watching for speedsters. Massachusetts State Police Superintendent Col. Timothy P. Alben has announced that a sobriety checkpoint will be established on an undisclosed public way in Essex County from Friday, Dec. 14, into Saturday, Dec. 15. Alben said in a press release the purpose of the checkpoint is to further educate motorists and strengthen public awareness about the need for both detecting drivers who are operating under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol and get them off the road. A state police trooper suffered minor injuries after a passing vehicle struck his elbow while the trooper was making a traffic stop on Route 128 Tuesday morning.
A state police trooper was injured Tuesday morning after he was struck by a passing motor vehicle on Route 128. Initial reports placed the accident in Peabody, but state police confirmed later it was over the town line into Lynnfield. State police say the trooper was conducting a routine motor vehicle stop on the southbound side of the highway near the Route 1 off-ramps at approximately 9:44 a.m. when he was struck on the elbow by a passing vehicle. The trooper, whose name was not released immediately, only suffered minor injuries and was able to get up and walk. He was transported by ambulance to Lahey Clinic for treatment and the extent of his injuries are not yet known, according to police. A flatbed trailer was called in to remove his …

State police issued a statement Monday night, confirming one passenger has died. The investigation is ongoing, although police are looking into speed and the weather as possible factors in the crash.
State police say one person has died from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle crash Monday afternoon on Route 128. The victim's name was not released yet, pending proper notification of the next of kin. The person was one of three passengers thrown from an SUV -- a 1998 Toyota 4-Runner -- when the vehicle hit a guardrail and rolled over just before the Lowell Street exit. The SUV was traveling on the southbound side of the highway around 4 p.m. and struck the right guardrail, coming to rest on its roof in the lefthand lane, according to a preliminary investigation by state police. Missing 12-year-old reportedly last seen leaving school in Methuen.
Police are searching for 12-year-old Joseph Christopulos, Jr., who was reportedly last seen leaving a school in Methuen Friday afternoon. Christopulos' father and stepmother, who live in Peabody, said their son was supposed to be transitioning to live with them. They said the last time they spoke with him was Thursday. "We had talked to him Thursday, and come Friday, he never came home from school," his step-mother Tabitha said. "No one has seen or heard from him." Methuen Police Sergeant Donald Levine told Peabody Patch at this time the department is not releasing any information, as the situation remains under investigation. The Peabody man who fled a traffic stop in Revere and led state troopers and police on a manhunt Tuesday night through Peabody is now being held on $10,000 bail. Leroy Frederick, Jr., 39, of 4 Essex Ln. #2C, Peabody, was arraigned in Chelsea District Court on Wednesday for failing to stop for police, driving with a suspended license as a habitual traffic offender, carrying a dangerous weapon and resisting arrest. He is due in Dorchester District Court Thursday on additional charges, stemming from three unrelated outstanding warrants. Peabody Police arrested three female suspects who are part of an East Coast organized retail crime group following a brief chase from the Northshore Mall parking lot onto Lowell Street that injured one officer. Meanwhile, the State Police Air Wing is currently aiding the search for a male suspect who Peabody Police say exited the vehicle. According to Peabody Police Det. Peter Olson, the suspects were under surveillance for several weeks by many law enforcement agencies along the East Coast and New England. Peabody firefighters work to extricate the victims after turkey flew into the path of one vehicle traveling south during Tuesday morning commute.
The two-car crash on Route 128 South Tuesday morning that sent one person to the hospital with serious injuries was apparently caused by a wild turkey that flew into the path of one of the vehicles. State Police Sgt. Matthew Murray of the law enforcement agency's media relations office, said this morning a wild turkey smashed the windshield of the first car involved in the accident around 6:20 a.m. and caused that vehicle to strike another vehicle on the highway. Peabody firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life extrication tool to free one of the two drivers, Murray said.
