LETTER: McNiff Provided 'Superior Leadership' Over 2 Years of Major School Renovations

Burke School Principal Judy McNiff is praised for leading the elementary school through a rough period of major renovations over two years.

[The following letter was submitted by the staff at the John E. Burke Elementary School.] To the Editor: As a staff, we would like to publicly thank our principal, Judy McNiff, for her superior leadership and unwavering support during the extraordinary circumstances our school community has endured during the last two school years. Our school, the Burke School in Peabody, has undergone major renovations during the school years 2011-2012 and 2012-2013. The building has received a new roof, boiler and windows, with the latter very recently being completed. While these were all necessary and make our facility healthier, sound and wonderful, they were all completed during the school years while the building was fully occupied. Obviously, this …

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Peabody Polar Express a Big Success

There were only a few criteria for the festive celebration: outdoors, music, family friendly, free and open to all.

To the Editor, In early November, a seemingly simple idea was hatched to create a celebration of the Christmas Season. There were only a few basic criteria. The event would be outdoors, there'd be music, it would be family-friendly, free and open to all. That modest concept, in just a few short weeks became, The Peabody Polar Express. Over 1,000 attendees took delight in seeing Lt. Ross Park transformed into a Christmas Wonderland complete with Santa, Christmas Sing-a-longs on a hay ride, face painting, elves of all descriptions and, of course, “The Grinch.” The smiles on the children’s faces would have been reward enough for all the work and planning, but thanks to the generosity of many, $1,600 was raised to help needy Peabody families …

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Shock at Obama, Warren Remarks on Small Businesses

Peabody's Scott Frasca sounds off on recent remarks from President Obama on the success of America's small businesses and entrepreneurs.

[Editor's Note: The letter below refers to specific remarks made by President Obama during a campaign stop in Virginia on July 13. You can read more here.] It is shocking to hear both President Obama and Elizabeth Warren demonize hard working men and women with their comments and it shows that they truly don’t understand how the private economy works. It takes a vision, commitment, dedication, and personal and financial sacrifice to live the American dream of owning a business and becoming successful. Warren specifically has spent her entire life in academics. She doesn’t understand how jobs are created and how the economy grows. The fact that she is trying to pit business owners against everyone else is counterproductive to improving the …

Ms. Harris, Your comments are a welcome-mat to the most detrimental aspects of an unbridled free-market society. I am a big advocate of American corporations keeping us in the upper echelon of global prosperity, but if you (as voter) cannot see that these corporations need a governing hand to limit their potential economic fallout then you have slept your way through the last decade. Peabody …   more ›

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Croce Says Time to Stop Piecemeal Approach to Peabody Square

City Council candidate Bob Croce says the city still needs to craft a master vision for Peabody Square and the downtown.

Although it's promising to see progress toward the vitally important revitalization of Peabody Square, many residents all over the city are still asking how these pieces fit together. We remain without an overall strategic plan for the square, and dusting off an old "master plan" will not accomplish this goal. The work done here on the Main Street reconfiguration by Green International is comprehensive for sure, but concerns remain over how this will affect adjacent side streets from the standpoint of traffic flow and public safety. As a taxpayer and candidate for Councilor At-Large, my concern is that we’ve approached this in a piecemeal fashion. We have a plan for the reconfiguration of Main Street, and plans for a culvert that will …

I am going to Laugh at you folks in Peabody. Ha, Ha, Ha.... The stupid plan to reduce Main Street from 4 lanes to 2 lanes. You will spend Millions and destroy Downtown in the process. 1) There will be a center Turn Lane. So you are not going from 4 lanes to 2, you are going to have 3 lanes. This means YOU GAIN NO PARKING spots. Gaining Parking was the main reason for the lane reduction. 2) Bridge…   more ›
