Prost! Karl's Owners Celebrate Successful Move to Peabody

Karl's Sausage Kitchen & European Market is finding itself right at home in its new Peabody location.

The mood was festive and upbeat inside Karl's Sausage Kitchen & European Market on Friday afternoon, and that wasn't just because of the three-piece band providing some traditional musical entertainment. Regular customers, city officials and other fans of the European shop streamed in and out to pick up some specialty meats or imported goods, grab a bite to eat and celebrate the official grand opening of Karl's. In addition to members of the Peabody Area Chamber of Commerce and Mayor Ted Bettencourt, Claudia Schütt, Deputy Consul of the German Consulate, also traveled up to Peabody for the day. Karl's Open for Business on Bourbon Street

New location will offer sandwiches, soup and other German fare in European cafe along with beer and wine.

Bob and Anita Gokey began the big move earlier this summer, moving their niche old world shop from Route 1 in Saugus into a larger space in Peabody. The new Karl's is not only roomier, but will also have a small European café area for about 20 sit-down customers who will be able to enjoy their lunch or dinner with a German beer or Riesling as well. The cafe and alcohol service are expected to start by mid-September. There's also a viewing …

The niche old world style market, which has been in business since 1958, is currently located on Route 1 North (142 Broadway) in Saugus, about four miles from where it will set up shop at 1 Bourbon St., just off the Lowell Street exit on Route 1. The new store will be situated between Dunkin' Donuts and Toscana's. Owners Bob and Anita Gokey officially announced the news recently via the Karl's Facebook page. The Gokeys say they are planning on moving the shop mid to late August over the course of a week, giving up their traditional …
