Scenes From the 3rd Annual Higgins Spelling Bee

Check out the photos and clips from the big bee.

Thirty of the top spellers at Higgins Middle School took the stage at the Northshore Mall Wednesday night for the 3rd Annual Higgins Spelling Bee. Things got underway promptly at 7 p.m. and lasted close to 9:30 p.m. before all three winners were determined. Gabe Goldman won 1st place, followed by Stephen May and Andeemae Sims in 2nd and 3rd.

Gabe Goldman is This Year's Spelling Champ [VIDEO]

A large crowd filled the Nordstrom wing at the Northshore Mall Wednesday night to watch the top spellers at Higgins Middle School compete in the 3rd Annual Higgins Spelling Bee.

[Editor's Note: The article has been updated to reflect a correction on the judging panel for the bee.] It took 24 rounds and just over two hours for this year's middle school spelling champ to emerge Wednesday night. VIDEO: The Big Bee

Higgins spelling champs showed off their skills in the championship bee at the mall.

[Editor's Note: The video footage of the spelling bee incorrectly identifies one contestant as Ashley Royer. It is actually Kyra Bresnahan, who won the seventh grade bee last year. We regret the error.] The 2nd Annual Higgins Spelling Bee, hosted by the Northshore Mall on Feb. 16, went 13 rounds in the championship spelling contest and lasted nearly three hours before a winner emerged. Seventh-grader Ashley Royer was the winner.

Higgins Spellers Battle it Out in Championship Bee

Higgins Middle School students competed in 13 rounds for three top spelling bee championship spots at the Northshore Mall.

After 13 rounds and three consecutive hours of spelling bee quizzes, Ashley Royer was the first place winner in the Second Annual Higgins Middle School Spelling Bee and Silent Auction. This was Royer's first appearance in the championship bee, which was hosted by the Northshore Mall, but she did compete in the bee for the sixth grade Sharks cluster last year. She's now a seventh-grader in the Bears cluster at the Higgins School. She competed against 29 champions last Thursday and plans to spell her way back to the championship next year as well. Her winning word was 'automatonous.' "I'm really excited I won," Royer said. "I wrote close to 1,000 words on flash cards and practiced them during school. They gave us a list of words they could …
