The department store was one of two local winners for Massachusetts in the 2012 Energy Star National Building Competition run by the EPA.
JC Penney joined the national energy race and emerged a winner. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced the winners of its 2012 Energy Star National Building Competition earlier this week and the department store ranked as a local winner for its location at the Northshore Mall. The point of the contest, which is in its third year, was to see how much schools, businesses and government buildings could save on energy in a year. For JC Penney's Peabody store that was $31,500 savings by reducing its energy usage by 24.7 percent. Competitors tracked their month-to-month energy consumption with an online energy tracking tool from the EPA. The national winner was the Demarest Elementary School in New Jersey, which reduced its energy …
Are you happy with it? Is there anything different you'd like to see offered?
So, it's just over two years ago now that the city agreed to a new contract with JRM Hauling & Recycling -- a five-year deal that was aimed at increasing recycling and saving the city some money on waste disposal. One of the biggest changes was the switch to weekly recycling and limitations on how much trash residents could put at the curb. City officials said the more material residents recycled, the more money the city could save and become more environmentally-friendly. So how do you rate the changes? Are you happy with them? Is there anything else you'd like to see the city and JRM offer in the way of trash disposal and recycling? Discuss in the comment section below.

98% of the time...it's terrific. We're all talking about the occasional bucket that escapes into the street. Yes it's a hazard but it's not always the workers fault Ok...sometimes it is. I think the company will accept valid complaints (hopefully) but it's not exactly the easiest job...try picking up 3 bags of garbage and throwing into a truck or taking off lids to the cans and while emptying the…   more ›

Students at the South Peabody elementary school recycled more material per person per school than their peers across the state last fall.
The Brown School is the winner of the 2012 Massachusetts Recycle Bowl. It's sort of like a Super Bowl for environmentally-conscious schools. The award from the Keep America Beautiful Recycle Bowl Contest will be presented Monday, March 18 during a brief ceremony at the school with a representative from the Washington, D.C.-based organization and school officials. The nationwide contest spanned four weeks in October and November during which students kept track of recycling efforts and reported them to contest officials. The fifth grade and Environmental Eagles participated in the contest. As state champions, that means Brown students recycled more material per person per school than their peers across the Bay State. "We recycled about …

Two information sessions will be held next week for anyone interested in learning more about a new CSA program the library is helping bring to Peabody residents.
Peabody residents will have yet another option to purchase fresh produce and other local farm goods this summer and reduce their carbon footprint. The Peabody Institute Library and the city of Peabody are sponsoring a Community Supported Agriculture program (CSA) with Silverbrook Farm out of Dartmouth. Before residents sign up for shares in the programs, two information sessions for anyone interested will be held March 6 at the West Branch (4 p.m.) and at the Main Branch (6:30 p.m.). Adult Services Librarian Kelly Rae Unger explains that in a CSA program, members agree to purchase products from a local farm throughout a season. "This agreement makes members shareholders of the farm, and each week the farm agrees to deliver the products to …
