Catarina Rocha has already outdone both her parents in their respective appearances in the national cross country championships 30 years ago. Saturday, she has a chance again to shine as one of the best female high school distance runners in the country. Rocha, a senior at Peabody High and coached by her dad Joe, will make her third straight appearance in the Foot Locker Cross Country Nationals on Dec. 8 in San Diego's Balboa Park. Rocha enters the race as the Northeast Regional Champion after dusting the field two weeks ago. Prior to that, she collected her second straight Massachusetts cross country title. Elite runner Catarina Rocha headed to national championships for third straight year.
Catarina Rocha blew away the field Saturday and heads to the Foot Locker Nationals in California as the Northeast cross country champion. Rocha, a senior at Peabody High, ran off with the title in 17:49.5 at Van Cortland Park in the Bronx, N.Y., a solid 20 seconds ahead of runner-up Megan Curham of Warren, N.J. This was Rocha's third straight appearance in the Foot Locker championship series. Back in 2010, Rocha turned in an impressive 8th place finish in 18:28 and then outdid herself the following year, taking 3rd in 18:20. The Foot Locker 5K race features some of the best high school cross country runners in the country. Peabody's Catarina Rocha will compete in her third regional championship Saturday with some of the best high school cross country runners in the northeast.
One last time, Catarina Rocha laces up her racing shoes for the northeast regional Foot Locker Cross Country Championships on Saturday. The Peabody High senior will make her third appearance in as many years at the Foot Locker race since first deciding to trade in her soccer cleats for a pair of running spikes. Rocha turned in an impressive 8th place finish in 18:28 in 2010 and then outdid herself last fall, taking 3rd in 18:20. Rocha just won her second straight Massachusetts title for cross country last Saturday. The Foot Locker 5K race, which features some of the best high school cross country runners in the northeast, takes place in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx section of New York.
