PHOTOS: The Littlest Engine

The 2011 customized pump engine works out of the Tremont Street fire station.

City and fire officials rolled out the Fire Department's new pump truck, Engine 4, on Thursday, to show off to the public. The engine was put into active service this winter and is a custom built 2011 model that was purchased for $350,000. The Tremont Street firehouse where the pumper is stationed is so cramped only certain engines can fit inside the bay. Mayor Ted Bettencourt offered brief remarks Thursday as the truck sat in the rear parking lot of Fire Headquarters, noting two veteran firefighters were just promoted the day before. "I want to be in a position to give you the tools and training you need... I have great admiration and respect for the work you do," Bettencourt told the small contingent of firefighters gathered with him. …

Check Out the Fire Dept.'s New Pump Engine

The Fire Department will conduct a live demonstration of its new pumper truck on Thursday behind Fire Headquarters.

The Fire Department will be showing off its newest engine Thursday down behind Fire Headquarters. Engine 4 arrived in Peabody in time for Firefighter James Rice's funeral services in December, actually, and was put into active service earlier this year. The pump engine, a 2011 custom built model from KME/KOVATCH in Pennsylvania, is stationed at the Tremont Street firehouse in Ward 3. The truck was purchased to replace a 22-year-old model (the original Engine 4) that was becoming too costly to repair. Due to the small size of the station, which was originally built in the 1800s for horse-drawn carriages, only the aging truck and another smaller pumper, Engine 26, could fit inside. That truck was also 22 years old and ready for retirement. …
