Senate race will have a Democratic primary, and a Libertarian candidate has now announced. But still no Republican contender.
With Massachusetts Republicans still scrambling to find someone to run in the race for the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by John Kerry’s appointment to Secretary of State, there are some other contenders who have jumped into the fray. On Monday, Beverly Libertarian Daniel Fishman announced he would attempt to get on the ballot for the U.S. Senate special election. Fishman garnered more than 16,000 votes in the 6th Congressional District election last fall, finishing third behind Congressman John Tierney and Republican candidate Richard Tisei. "The thing I became most aware of on the campaign trail is that there is a large group of citizens in Massachusetts who are not being represented by the Democratic machine, which elects favorite sons …

Local Democrats and Republicans talk how to move forward now that the election is over.
No matter which side or candidate you were supporting, the 2012 election was likely one of the most politically and socially divisive elections in recent years. And victory was decidedly with one party in Massachusetts -- the Democrats -- on Tuesday with some hotly contested races that initially appeared could swing either way. The congressional race between incumbent John Tierney and Republican challenger Richard Tisei was widely considered one of the nastiest in the nation, highlighted by scathing attacks in political ads from both sides and even in person between the rival candidates. The U.S. Senate race between incumbent Scott Brown and Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren was similarly neck-and-neck at times and just as divisive…

The battle for the 6th District seat is over.
Congressman John Tierney has defeated Republican challenger Richard Tisei in an extremely tight race for Massachusetts 6th District congressional seat. This has been an unusually high-profile congressional race in Massachusetts, which is considered a stronghold for House Democrats. Tierney suffered from the impact of a family scandal involving his wife, her brother and her brother’s illegal offshore gambling business. Tisei, on the other hand, climbed to popularity with his aggressive campaign, his theme of bipartisanship and his years of serving in the state legislature. He out-raised Tierney in campaign donations every quarter. Tisei made Tierney’s family legal scandal a focus of the campaign, calling Tierney’s credibility into question…

There are many issues in the 6th District congressional race. Which one is the big factor for you?
The election is less than two weeks away. In the Massachusetts Sixth District, voters will decide who their next congressman will be. Incumbent Democrat John Tierney is in an intense race against Republican challenger Richard Tisei and Libertarian Daniel Fishman. The campaign has gained national attention. Legal drama involving Tierney's inlaws, Tierney campaign talk of Tisei having radical right-wing connections, and the emergence of Fishman's outside-the-box third party effort have made the race eventful, to say the least. All this, in the midst of a federal budget crisis, Medicare, student loans, abortion, high unemployment and more. We want to know what issue is the biggest deciding factor in your vote in the 6th District race. Discuss…

He's been left out of a debate, and he's not backing down.
Libertarian congressional candidate Daniel Fishman has filed a complaint against WCVB with the Federal Elections Commission. WCVB is planning a 6th District congressional candidates' debate on Thursday, and Fishman was not invited because he did not meet the station's criteria. The requirements are such that a candidate must have a certain number of staff members, a daily campaign schedule, communicate on a regular basis with news media, garner at least 10 percent in two recent independent polls and have campaign contributions of at least $50,000. Fishman's complaint alleges that WCVB's criteria are in violation of FEC guidelines. First, the FEC mandates that a station use "pre-established criteria" to determine who is allowed to …

The congressman called his opponent "shameless" and "irrelevant."
Democratic Congressman John Tierney brought sharpened teeth to the debate with Republican opponent Richard Tisei on NECN Thursday, and he wasted no time digging in. Just one day after the 6th District congressional candidates gathered in North Andover for a debate, the two appeared on "The Broadside" with Jim Braude and left most of the pleasantries at the door. Tierney faces an intense battle for reelection, with many polls showing Tisei either ahead of him or surging upward, and the eight-term congressman worked to aggressively take his opponent down a few notches Thursday -- attacking his decades-long state legislator record and calling him "shameless." Video of the entire debate can be watched on NECN's Web site. Early on, the focus …

The debate in the race for the 6th Congressional District was hosted by the Merrimack Valley Chamber of Commerce.
Candidates in the Massachusetts 6th District congressional race -- incumbent Democrat John Tierney, Republican Richard Tisei and Libertarian Daniel Fishman -- gathered at North Andover High School to debate issues important to voters. Hosted by the Merrimack Valley Chamber of Commerce and moderated by Chairman Sal Lupoli, the debate lasted about an hour and focused on issues relating to small business and job growth. In what may at this point seem like a surprise, the debate focused on policy issues instead of personal issues. Tierney's wife Patrice and her family legal issues were not even mentioned. Tierney faces an intense battle for reelection, as many recent polls have showed Tisei either ahead of him or surging upward. And Fishman …

The Libertarian candidate is not invited to attend a debate.
For a recent Fox 25 debate, John Tierney chose not to attend. But now, another local news station is asking another candidate to do the same. Libertarian candidate for Congress Daniel Fishman says that he doesn't qualify to participate in WCVB's hour-long debate to be held on Oct. 25. "My first reaction was shock," Fishman wrote on his website. "At each debate we have put on a strong performance, and at each debate our ranks have swelled. Our campaign has serious momentum." Participation in the debate, Fishman said, depended on certain criteria: a candidate must have a certain number of staff members, a daily campaign schedule, communicate on a regular basis with news media, garner at least 10 percent in two recent independent polls and …

The three candidates for the Sixth Congressional District debated at Danvers High School on Wednesday night.
Congressman John Tierney was the first one to bring up his in-laws' legal problems during Wednesday night’s debate, accusing Republican challenger Richard Tisei of attacking his wife’s family to get to him. It was an issue that was left out of the first debate involving the two in Lynn last week and a topic that the Boston Herald had previously reported would be left out of several debates at the request of Tierney (D-Salem). “You attacked my wife and her family as a way to get to me,” Tierney told Tisei, a former state senator from Wakefield, who was seated on the opposite side of Libertarian candidate Daniel Fishman of Beverly on stage in the auditorium at Danvers High School. Tierney’s statement came in response to a question from Salem…

A gas leak on Wednesday afternoon at Danvers High School will not stop the Congressional debate planned for 7 p.m. in the auditorium.
The Congressional debate scheduled for Wednesday night at Danvers High School, which was evacuated earlier in the day because of a nearby gas main break, will go ahead as scheduled. School Superintendent Lisa Dana said students and staff were allowed back in the building at 3:20 p.m. and everything is back to normal. She said the debate, scheduled for 7 p.m. in the auditorium, will happen as scheduled. U.S. Rep. John Tierney, (D-Salem) and Republican challenger Richard Tisei will meet for their second debate of the campaign. Libertarian candidate Daniel Fishman will also join them. All three candidates are vying to represent the Sixth Congressional District, which includes Danvers. Construction workers at the high school construction site …
