Peabody's Rocha Ranked No. 5 in Nation

Elite distance runner Catarina Rocha is now ranked the fifth best female high school cross country runner in the nation.

As she prepares to head to San Diego again for the national championships of high school cross country, Peabody's Catarina Rocha does so as the No. 5 runner in the country, according to MileSplit, Inc. The website, which covers high school cross country and track and field, released its nationwide rankings on Monday, based on 2012 season performances to date (particularly in head-to-head races). MileSplit previously ranked Rocha 23rd in the country before she blew away the rest of the field at the Foot Locker Northeast Championships on Saturday. Rocha an All-American

Catarina Rocha says she's taking a well-deserved, if short, break from running after placing 7th at the Foot Locker Cross Country National Championships. She'll be back running indoor track soon enough.

Peabody's Catarina Rocha competed against 39 of the best female high school runners in the country and placed 7th in the Foot Locker Cross Country National Championships Saturday at Balboa Park in San Diego, Calif. Breaking the top 10, gave her All-American status. "It feels great," Rocha said. "There are 10 girls from each region: West, Midwest, Northeast (which I'm in), and South. It's only my second year running cross country. Freshman year, I [played] varsity soccer." The course was 3.1 miles and Rocha covered it in just 17:38, an improvement from her performance at last year's national championships -- 18:34 minutes in 31st place.
