Dowd, Rocha First Peabody Females to Earn Gatorade Player of Year Awards

Hayley Dowd and Catarina Rocha were both recently named Gatorade Players of the Year for their respective sports last fall.

Peabody now not only has had a female student-athlete recognized for the first time as the best in the state in her sport, but two at the same time. Peabody High juniors and star athletes Hayley Dowd and Catarina Rocha have both been awarded Gatorade Player of the Year honors for soccer and cross-country, respectively, joining just two other Tanners to receive Gatorade honors. Peabody grads Jeff Allison and Ryan Moorer, both baseball stars, won the awards in 2003 and 2004, respectively. The annual awards handed out by the Gatorade Company seek to honor elite student-athletes who perform at the top of their game both on an off the field. Dowd and Rocha are both “A” students, members of the school captains' council and volunteer with …

Rocha Chalks Up Another Title, Record at All-States

Rocha and Grube headed to New England Championships for Tanners' indoor track.

Is it a surprise? Peabody High distance running star Catarina Rocha captured the state title in the mile on Sunday and broke the meet record at the same time. Rocha clocked in 4:50.38 -- about five seconds ahead of Foxborough's Liz Holmes -- to break the 2007 record (4:52.11) set by Bridget Dahlberg of Newton South. All-States for indoor track was held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury. Rocha's time was also five seconds faster than her performance two weeks ago in the Division I Championships. She now advances to the New England Championships on March 2. Two other Lady Tanners competed on Sunday as well. Pam Zabala tossed for 10th in the girls' shot put with 34 3-1/2 while Heather MacLean clocked in 42.73 in the 300 meter for a 15th …

Rocha an All-American

Catarina Rocha says she's taking a well-deserved, if short, break from running after placing 7th at the Foot Locker Cross Country National Championships. She'll be back running indoor track soon enough.

Peabody's Catarina Rocha competed against 39 of the best female high school runners in the country and placed 7th in the Foot Locker Cross Country National Championships Saturday at Balboa Park in San Diego, Calif. Breaking the top 10, gave her All-American status. "It feels great," Rocha said. "There are 10 girls from each region: West, Midwest, Northeast (which I'm in), and South. It's only my second year running cross country. Freshman year, I [played] varsity soccer." The course was 3.1 miles and Rocha covered it in just 17:38, an improvement from her performance at last year's national championships -- 18:34 minutes in 31st place. Her uncle, Fernando Braz, the track coach at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School, noted her performance…

Rocha, Christensen Win EMass; Peabody on to All-State XC Meet

Catarina Rocha and Nick Christensen took home two individual wins Saturday while both Peabody squads advance to All-State Cross-Country Meet.

Fleet-footed Catarina Rocha did it again Saturday, sprinting past her competition for another first-place finish at the Eastern Mass. Division I Cross-Country Championships. Rocha's win last year as a sophomore in 18:35 was a lot closer though with only six seconds separating her and Newton South's Kathy O'Keefe. On Saturday, Rocha (18:06) outpaced runner-up Maggie Mullins of Andover (18:41) in the 5K course, although it still wasn't fast enough to come close to the course record set by Marblehead's Shalane Flanagan in 1999. Flanagan clocked in a 17:08 that year. The Lady Tanners (118 points) finished third as a team, a point behind Lowell and not far off front-runner Weymouth (102 points). Peabody's Lauren Barrett finished 20th (20:18), …
