Higgins Housemaster Named New Carroll School Principal

Tracy Smith, a housemaster at the middle school, will be the new principal at the Carroll Elementary School.

A permanent hire is now in place to lead Peabody's largest elementary school -- Tracy Smith. The 41-year-old educator and mother of three boys was revealed at Tuesday night's School Committee meeting as the new principal for the Thomas Carroll Elementary School. Smith has worked in Peabody for the past four years as a housemaster at Higgins Middle School. Smith said principalship has long been a goal of hers and she can't envision a better place to begin that next phase of her career than at the Carroll School. There are 580 students enrolled in grades K-5 at the school this year. "I cannot wait to become embedded in the community of Carroll School with the families of the children and teachers," she said. She later told reporters that her…

Finalists Named for Carroll and South School Principal Jobs

Three finalists apiece will be interviewed for the two elementary school principal positions. Out of the six, three candidates currently work in the district.

The superintendent's office says there are now three finalists each for the open principal positions at the South and Carroll elementary schools. Interim principals were hired at both schools in recent months, following the promotion of Cara Murtagh to Assistant Superintendent from the Carroll last summer and the retirement of Maryellen McGrath from the South at the end of January. The South School finalists are Katelin Kennedy, Matthew Fusco and Tracy Smith. Kennedy has been at the school for nine years, the last three as Assistant Principal before serving as Interim Principal as of Feb. 1. Fusco is the principal at Great Oak Elementary School in Danvers and Smith is an eighth grade housemaster at Higgins Middle School, where she has …

Maureen Malionke I agree with you! Mrs. McGrath was helpful and if you needed to talk to her, she was their for you...Was she perfect ? No, but no one is...She did say good bye to her staff, her staff had a retirement party for her... and the year is not over yet, and I am sure she will be back...No one knows what her health situation is, so maybe we shouldnt assume anything....People should …   more ›

13 Applicants in Pool for New Peabody High Principal

Mastrocola says he hopes to have new high school principal on board for July 1. Principal searches also underway for Carroll and South elementary schools.

Peabody Schools Superintendent Joe Mastrocola says the current pool of candidates for the high school principal job just confirms that it was the right decision last summer to keep Ed Sapienza on for one more year. Sapienza had retired in June, but then agreed to stay on for another year in an interim capacity, as a full-fledged effort was launched to find a permanent hire. Mastrocola declined to comment on the candidates thus far (the application deadline closed on Friday), other than to say the pool was competitive and contained qualified people for the job. He informed the School Committee Tuesday night that 13 people had applied and a screening committee, which also included five high school students, would narrow down that list and …

We all know that this will be an "in house" or "old time Peabody" appointment. No new blood in this city! Mastrocola (asst super who leaves for a few years and returns as super), Levine (what a hack "consultant gig" he has with the city!), Sapienza ("retires" and then comes back for a year...cheating the pension system??) and Murtagh (what is an assistant superintendent do exactly? And how does …   more ›

Interim Hires Made for Carroll Principal and Special Ed Director

Both vacant positions have now been filled on a temporary basis until permanent hires can be made.

Peabody school officials announced today that both the principal position at the Carroll School and the special education director post have been filled on an interim basis. Paul Guerrette, a retired elementary school principal from Reading, will serve as the temporary principal at the Carroll, the city's largest elementary school, while Joan Endicott returns to Peabody to lead the special education department until a permanent hire is made. At his last post before retiring, Guerrette led a successful effort to have the school selected by state education officials as one of seven schools in Massachusetts to be designated a Carnegie School. The 1988 educational reform initiative promoted new practices and governance structures in schools. …

Why can't Peabody just hire someone for a job? Why must they play this "interim" game almost every time a position needs to be filled? Superintendent, high school principal, carroll school principal, special ed director.... is it lack of planning, or are qualified applicants avoiding Peabody? Are we waiting to appoint one of the "good ole boys" already experienced in the system (like we did with …   more ›
