Papi, 69, of Peabody, died Tuesday morning at her sisters home surrounded by her loving family following a brief illness. She was the devoted wife of the late James Papi. Born in Lynn, she was daughter of the late Francis and Geraldine (McGrath) Hynes. She was a lifelong resident of Peabody and a graduate of Peabody High School, Class of 1960. She continued her education at Salem State College and received her bachelors’ degree in education in 1964, and her master’s degree in 1968. Carol taught in the city of Peabody for over 48 years, retiring this past June. She first started her teaching career at the Kiley School and for the past 39 years she taught …

The future Welch School playground was dedicated to retired teacher Carol Papi on Wednesday.
The sweltering heat didn't stop a sizeable crowd from coming out Wednesday for a noon ceremony to honor longtime Welch School teacher Carol Papi. Papi, 69, just retired after 48 years as a classroom teacher, 38 of them at the Welch School with second-graders. Colleagues, school officials and parents agreed that a fitting honor for the longtime teacher would be to dedicate the future playground at the Welch to her. The project has accordingly been named the Mrs. Carol Papi Playground and a placeholder sign declaring the dedication was unveiled on Wednesday.
