A nighttime vigil took place in the fieldhouse of PVMHS on June 23 in memory of Joncarlos “JC” Perez, who died June 11 in a motor vehicle accident while visiting the Dominican Republic.
Families, friends and classmates gathered together once again in remembrance of Joncarlos “JC” Perez Thursday night at a student-led vigil in the field house at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School. The vigil was initially planned with candles for the football field, but ultimately held inside due to rain. That didn’t stop mourners from lighting up the building with their cell phones. The location was fitting to honor Perez’ memory — he graduated on June 3 and wrestled in the field house as a key member of the PVMHS team. James Dibello, Class of 2010, had known Perez since 2007 and the two would often talk before and after school. Graduation is a memorable milestone in life, most often from which we boldly step forward, ready to take on what the world has to offer. But, tragically for one Peabody high school graduate — eighteen-year-old Joncarlos “JC” Perez, a wrestling and martial arts stand-out — he didn’t make it to live more than a week past his high school commencement. Perez was visiting the Dominican Republic before heading back to the states to visit family in Florida when he was killed in a car accident on June 11.
