CHART: Top 50 City Earners in 2012

Today's chart shows the top 50 earners in 2011 for the city of Peabody.

On Friday, we reported that 62 city employees earned more than $100,000 last year, showed the top 20 earners and gave some explanation on why police officers tend to place so high on the list of high earners on the public payroll. Today's chart below shows the top 50 earners in 2012 for the city of Peabody. * Earnings reflect gross income

Paying police overtime is a far more cost-effective solution when you consider the added expenses of benefits like healthcare (which will continue to rise), training, equipment, insurance, etc. Not to mention the lifetime pensions that additional personnel would receive to cover 20-30 years of retirement living in the future. I have no problem with the cops, they put in long crazy hours away from…   more ›

62 Earn $100K or More on City Payroll in 2012

Per usual, light plant manager and sea of blue dominate top earners on city payroll.

The only change this year is that it's Glenn Trueira, the current manager at the Peabody Municipal Light Plant, topping the city's earning charts for 2012 instead of William Waters. Trueira earned $164,406 last year, according to city records, still less than Waters' $169,758 for his final year before retiring at the end of 2011. Next and leading off the Police Department in gross pay is Deputy Chief Martin Cohan, who earned $154,837, followed by Michael Coleman at PMLP with $147,909. Filling out the rest of the 10 highest paid city employees for 2012 are all police and one more PMLP employee -- Sgt. Timothy Maroney, Lt. Scott Wlasuk, Sgt. Vincent Patermo, Chief Robert Champagne, Lt. Arthur Yeo, PMLP engineer Russell Dunn and Capt. Dennis …

Troy in case you had't heard Peabody has "earned" the dubious distinction of being a "gateway city" which means its median household income has dropped and only 30% of Peabody residents have a College degree.... Oh boy the cities "top earners" are licking their chops with all the extra State/Federal funding that will be coming our way, no better way to line their pockets, increase salaries and …   more ›

Mayor Says He Will Take Pay Raise

Bettencourt will accept the increased salary the City Council voted to give him this week -- a 10 percent pay raise.

He didn't ask for it, but Mayor Ted Bettencourt says he will accept the raise offered him this week by the City Council. Bettencourt said Friday afternoon the amount wasn't out of step with what mayors in Beverly and Salem are paid and therefore was "comfortable" with accepting the higher salary after just one year on the job. Councilors voted 8-2 Thursday during their annual review of the mayor's and councilors' salaries to boost the mayor's base pay to $105,000, which is just over a 10 percent increase. "I knew the meeting was coming up...but I didn't take a position on a raise and certainly didn't ask for one," Bettencourt said. He noted, however, he consistently voted in favor of raising the mayor's salary while a councilor himself. …

Saber, You have no idea what you are talking about. Stop spreading your negative lies about the high school on this board. Either support your stance with PROOF or enough already. Just another helicopter mom who thinks that the outside world is so "dangerous." Go to some other cities around here...it will open your eyes to what REALLY bad schools look like!   more ›

City Council Gives First Raise to Peabody Mayor in 12 Years

Mayor Ted Bettencourt will receive just over a 10 percent pay bump. City councilors also gave themselves a raise along with school board members, although the councilors' raise doesn't start until 2014.

[Editor's Note: The article has been updated to clarify former Mayor Bonfanti's refusal to accept a pay raise and the council's actions in that regard.] City councilor Dave Gamache has been trying for the past 12 years and he finally has a mayor now who appears open to receiving a pay raise. The City Council voted Thursday night to hike the mayor's base pay to $105,000, which is just over a 10 percent increase from the current $94,933 salary and will mean Mayor Ted Bettencourt will now earn the same or slightly more than his many of his senior department heads. The new salary will take effect once the ordinance is adopted, likely next month. Gamache says the higher salary is long overdue, especially given that all other city employees have…

Let me get this straight, Ward 6 Councilor Barry Sinewitz votes against all city employee raises, votes himself a raise AND takes the city's health insurance! It's time for this guy to go. Unbelievable.   more ›
