Peabody Girls' Hoops Headed to Playoffs

Girls' basketball, swimming and indoor track at Peabody High make strides in the postseason.

Peabody High girls' hoops is back on track after a couple straight seasons out of the state tournament bracket. The Tanners (16-4) are seeded 4th and host No. 13 Methuen (11-9) on Feb. 26 (7 p.m.). The last time Peabody qualified for the Division I North playoffs was 2010 and the Tanners were cleanly knocked from the tournament in the semi-final by Central Catholic. The Tanners didn't qualify in 2009, but again from 2006-2008 didn't make it far into the tournament. Peabody Basketball Hits Highs and Lows to Start Season

The Peabody High boys are still hunting for a win, while the girls handily won their season opener, and the Crusaders over at Bishop Fenwick are off to a solid start.

It's been a tough start to the season so far for the Peabody High boys' basketball team. The Tanners lost to non-league opponent Somerville Wednesday night at home, 60-49, and then suffered defeat against league rival Salem Friday night, 57-35. Next up for the boys is Beverly Tuesday (7 p.m.) on the Panthers home court. The girls' team, however, had just the opposite game against Salem, shutting down the Witches, 54-37, in the season opener. Carolyn Scacchi was the high scorer for Peabody with 14 points. The Panthers travel to Peabody Tuesday (7 p.m.). Peabody Girls' Playoff Journey to Defend State Title Starts Sunday

Peabody girls' soccer hosts its first opponent Sunday at home, while the boys travel to Acton-Boxborough on Saturday.

The state champion Lady Tanners head into the Division I North playoffs this weekend to defend their title on a 17-1-0 record, their perfect streak broken only by Acton-Boxborough. Peabody High girls' soccer had amassed an impressive 38-game streak before losing 2-1 to the Colonials two weeks ago, and as luck may have it, the Tanners' first opponent in the tournament may very well be Acton-Boxborough. Seeded No. 1 for the third year in a row, and still ranked near the top nationwide, the Tanners host the winner of Saturday's preliminary round contest between Billerica and Acton-Boxborough on Sunday (6 p.m.). Tanners, Crusaders Ready to Rumble in Fall Season [PHOTOS]

Fall sports are off and running at Peabody High and Bishop Fenwick -- boys' and girls' soccer, volleyball, field hockey, cross country, football and cheerleading.

The state champion girls' squad, ever a dominant force in Division I, looks to shake things up again this fall on the soccer field as nine strong starters return to play. The girls were undefeated last year and only met with tied games twice, before romping through the playoffs and on to the first ever state title for the program. Peabody hosts Northeastern Conference opponent Revere on Thursday (3:45 p.m.) Meanwhile, the Peabody boys' soccer opened on Tuesday against Lynn English with a tie, 2-2. Both the girls' and boys' squads were scheduled to travel to Acton-Boxborough on Saturday, but the games were canceled due to the threat of thunderstorms.
