Should DUI Alcohol Limit Be Lowered To 0.05 Percent?

The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.

One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. What do you think? Is the proposal reasonable? About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink. There were 114 DUI fatalities in Massachusetts in 2012, which were 34 percent of traffic-related fatalities last year, according to Mothers…

Who Wants a Full Liquor Restaurant License? The City Has 1

City officials are going out of their way to announce the fact that the city has one all-alcohol restaurant license available and it's up for grabs at a fraction of the cost licenses normally trade at. A press release from the Peabody Licensing Board Wednesday morning said the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission (ABCC) has confirmed that the license is now available. This particular license was previously marketed by the license holder in the neighborhood of $150,000-$200,000 and comes by way of resolution of a legal challenge to the board's decision in 2010 to finally revoke the unused license. Board members were …

Martino Before Liquor Board Tonight for New License

Licensing Board members harshly criticized Frank Martino this summer for profiting from the sale of his liquor license and now seeking another one from the city for package store.

Frank Martino will be back before Peabody liquor authorities tonight to seek a new beer and wine license for his package store on Route 1 South. Martino has sold his full liquor license to Trader Joe's, which will soon be stocking the shelves of its Peabody store with beer, wine and liquor, assuming the Licensing Board sees no reason to not approve the license transfer. While board members have no problem with the Route 114 grocer selling alcohol, they do have a problem with Martino. That's because he obtained a new license from the city last year -- the only remaining all-alcohol package store license the city held -- and then went and sold it for a locally record-setting price, $205,000, to Trader Joe's. Martino will now be back before …
